Oregon State University

Oregon State University in Corvallis provides a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geology program. These programs include field work and provide research opportunities in 3 main areas- surface earth processes and history, human interaction with the earth and solid earth processes and history. Students may choose from a traditional track in geology or an interdisciplinary track with Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences and choose from a range of concentrations in areas like geophysics, neotonics, volcanology, glacial geology, marine geology and geochemistry. The MS and PhD programs require seminar courses and a thesis.

Portland State University

Portland State University in Portland offers an MA and MS in Geology, graduate certificates in the field, a unique MA or MS in Teaching (science) through the Department of Geology and a PhD in Earth, Environment, & Society. Students in the PhD program complete a dissertation and can specialize in areas such as environmental geology, geomechanics, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geomicrobiology, applied stratigraphy and glaciology. The traditional MA and MS degree programs in geology total 45 credits and may require a thesis. The MA or MS in Teaching programs also require 45 credits and students must complete a final written and oral exam.

University of Oregon

Eugene's University of Oregon is home to the Department of Earth Sciences that has master's and PhD programs that allow students to focus in diverse research areas, including geobiology, geochemistry, sedimentology, petrology, geomorphology, geomechanics, geophysics and structural geology. The master's degree program requires at least 45 credits and a thesis. The PhD program totals 81 credits, a comprehensive exam and a dissertation. The PhD program takes at least 3 years of full-time study to complete and both degree programs require students to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout their respective program.
