Court Clerks

Court clerks assist with a variety of courtroom tasks such as preparing case dockets, contacting attorneys and witnesses, as well as recording case dispositions. Court clerks may also prepare documents pertaining to case outcomes, prepare and issue court orders, and review legal documents for lawful compliance. Court clerks typically need a high school diploma and qualifying clerical experience. Retirees who have worked in positions such as office assistants may possess sufficient experience.

Judicial Law Clerk

Judicial law clerks conduct research, prepare legal documents, and work with judges. These clerks may proofread documents written by judges, review motions and complaints that have been filed, and research court decisions and other information relevant to cases. Judicial law clerks typically need a graduate degree in law and several years of qualifying experience. Retirees who have previously worked in law and hold at least a master's degree may qualify.


Legislators are elected officials who create and implement laws at local to federal levels. Most positions require a four-year degree and relevant experience. Retirees may qualify for legislative positions especially if they have worked in managerial roles and have an understanding of laws and regulations.

Public Library Technicians

Public library technicians help librarians with various tasks such as assisting readers, answering phones, organizing records and shelves, completing library transactions, and registering patrons. Library technicians usually need at least a two-year degree or relevant training. Retirees can expect a balance of physical and resting work, and may qualify for full-time or part-time positions.

Parking Enforcement Workers

Parking enforcement workers typically patrol areas as assigned and issue tickets to those who violate parking rules or park illegally. Other tasks may include court appearances, equipment maintenance, and data entry. Retirees who have at least a high school diploma and some relevant experience may qualify.

Postal Service Clerks

Postal service clerks are responsible for a variety of tasks in post offices including selling postage, receiving letters and packages, and examining mail to ensure proper postage. Retirees may qualify for full-time or part-time positions, and should expect to spend a large amount of time standing or walking. Postal service clerk positions typically require a high school diploma and some related experience, such as sales.

Postal Service Mail Carriers

Postal service mail carriers sort and deliver mail to customers. These mail carriers may scan labels, obtain signatures, and deliver mail via driving or walking, depending on their route. Mail carriers who drive their route spend much of the day sitting. Postal service mail carriers usually need a high school diploma and some qualifying experience.

Postmasters and Mail Superintendents

Postmasters and mail superintendents plan and coordinate services of post offices including administrative and operational. Job functions may include reviewing time and schedules, organizing activities, resolving complaints, and directing services of one or more post offices. Many positions may only require a high school degree, but typically candidates do need relevant experience in roles such as management. Retirees looking for full-time work who have management or postal service experience may qualify.
