Universities Offering Graduate Certificates in New York
Pace offers eight online graduate certificates in addition to dozens of on-campus offerings. Students can choose from various fields, including security and information assurance, magazine publishing, and internet technology for e-commerce. Many programs are 12 to 15 credit hours in length and consist of four to five courses. In the magazine publishing program, for instance, students can choose from among courses such as magazine production, specialized publications, publishing finance and magazine circulation. The information systems certificate, to give another example, has 12 credit hours in core courses such as information systems principles and business telecommunications. Students then choose a 3-credit hour course from a preapproved list of electives.
The University at Albany
The University at Albany breaks its graduate certificates into the following categories: Certificate of Graduate Study, Advanced Graduate Certificate, and Certificate of Advanced Study. They range from 9-24 credits for the Certificate of Graduate Study to 48-60 credit hours beyond a bachelor's degree for the Certificate of Advanced Study. For example, the Certificate of Graduate Study in Community College Leadership is 12 credit hours in length and contains classes in community college administration and leadership for career education systems. The Advanced Graduate Certificate in School Building Leadership Program, however, is the next level up and requires 35 credit hours. It includes courses such as organizational leadership, macrosociology of education, and educational leadership.
Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University also has both graduate certificates and advanced graduate certificates at the postbaccalaureate level. Subjects range from Asian and Asian American studies to human resource management. A graduate certificate in coaching, for example, has an 18-credit-hour requirement and includes courses such as care and prevention of athletic injuries and intercollegiate athletics. An advanced certificate is also available in nutrition if one does not want to pursue a full master's degree. It includes 15 credit hours and covers topics like nutrition concepts and trends.
Empire State College
There are numerous options for graduate certificates at Empire State College, including programs in the fields of education, business, and the liberal arts and sciences. A graduate certificate in American studies, for example, consists of 12 credit-hours and includes two required courses - a seminar and a theory and methods course. Elective classes cover such topics as American mass media, mass culture, and American women writers. An advanced certificate in public history, on the other hand, is 15 credit hours long and has a prescribed curriculum including an internship and classes in oral history methods and archival theory.
University at Buffalo
This university has over 40 programs for students who want to obtain a graduate certificate. Options range from historic preservation to qualitative methodology. An advanced certificate in Canadian-American studies, for example lasts one year and is 15 credit hours, while an advanced certificate in bridge engineering is nine to 12 credit hours but can take one to two years to complete. A graduate certificate in historic preservation is 18 credit hours and includes courses such as historic preservation documentation and field methods, architecture history, and urban structure.
This university caters to a number of students, including those who wish to gain a stand-alone certificate, students who wish to have an add-on to the program they are already studying, and those who would like a certificate for completion professional teaching purposes. There are well over 20 options to choose from, with programs ranging from translation studies to cybersecurity. Some programs are add-on only (such as some cultural studies, science, and engineering programs), and some only award a certificate of completion (the teaching programs). To give an example of one of Binghamton University's programs, the local government management graduate certificate is 15 credit hours and contains courses on budgeting and financial management as well as forms and structures of local governments.
Oswego State University of New York
Oswego has 11 different options to obtain a graduate certificate. This university also differentiates between a Certificate of Advanced Studies and an Advanced Certificate. For example, an Advanced Certificate in Trauma Studies is available completely online and is meant for postbaccalaureate students. It has a 15-credit-hour course load. A Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership is 33 credit hours and takes around 2 years to complete. This certificate is meant for educational professionals and contains courses such as school principalship and curriculum administration.
The College at Brockport
The College at Brockport also offers different graduate certificate program levels - it has Certificates of Advanced Study and Graduate Certificates. A graduate certificate in creative writing, for example, is 15 credit hours and the curriculum contains various workshops and seminars. A graduate certificate in nonprofit management, however, has 4 specified courses at 3 credit hours each (examples are public service organization marketing and nonprofit sector foundations). A graduate certificate in gerontology is 15 credit hours and contains field practicums.
Program Admittance Requirements for Graduate Certificate Programs in New York
With so many options for students to obtain graduate certificates in the State of New York, the admissions criteria will vary a bit from university to university. However, applicants can expect to provide proof of a bachelor's degree. They may be required to hold a certain GPA coming out of their undergraduate programs as well (usually around a 3.0). Transcripts, resumes, letters of recommendation, and GRE or GMAT scores may be required for applications. Students can often expect to have to write a personal statement as to their ambitions for joining a program. Some programs may require a teaching certificate or a portfolio for arts-related certificates.
