The George Washington University

One option for a graduate certificate offered at The George Washington University is the 15-credit program in nuclear policy studies. This program is offered through GW's Elliot School of International Affairs. Courses may include the science of nuclear materials, nuclear security policy, and energy policy. A range of other graduate certificates are available through other departments at George Washington, including corporate responsibility, global management, forensic investigation, and documentary filmmaking.

The Catholic University of America

The Catholic University of America allows students to seek a post-bachelor's graduate certificate in Latin. This program may be utilized by students hoping to move into a doctoral program that requires a reading knowledge of the language. The length of the program may depend on prior experience with the language. Those in this program focus on reading, writing, and interpreting classical and postclassical Latin. Other graduate certificates that are available at CUA include pre-theology studies and family nurse practitioner.

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland, located just outside of Washington, D.C. in College Park, Maryland, offers a graduate certificate in bioengineering. Courses may include application of biomaterials and physiology for bioengineers. Four courses are required to earn the graduate certificate. Other certificate options include African-American studies, criminal justice administration, economic analysis, and cybersecurity.

University of the District of Columbia

Those interested in the field of adult education can earn a graduate certificate at the University of the District of Columbia. The 24-credit-hour graduate certificate is cohort-based, meaning that students progress through the program together. Courses may include teaching adults with special needs and communicating with adults in the classroom. An internship may be required for those without experience in the field of adult education. Other graduate certificates at UDC include entrepreneurship and procurement/public contracting.

Johns Hopkins University

The Carey School of Business of Johns Hopkins University offers certificate programs at both its D.C. and Baltimore campuses. One option is the 16-credit graduate certificate in investments. Courses may include corporate finance, derivatives, and fixed income. Courses can be applied to the MBA or MS in Finance if students decide to advance past the graduate certificate. Those who complete this certificate may be qualified for the Chartered Financial Analysis exam. Other graduate certificate options at Johns Hopkins in DC include the financial management certificate. A range of other programs are offered online or in Baltimore, such as science writing and geographic information systems.

Admissions

Admission requirements for graduate certificate programs will differ depending on the type of graduate certificate sought, as well as the university. A bachelor's degree will usually be required; however some specialized programs may require students to hold a professional certification or license. For technical graduate certificates, specific prerequisite courses may be required. Students may expect to provide transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume, and recommendations. Standardized tests such as the GRE are typically not required, but may be considered for admission if available.
