University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is 1 of 6 University of Wisconsin schools that collaborates with the University of Wisconsin Extended Campus to offer an online Master of Science (MS) in Data Science. The program was created for working adults and offers flexible schedules for courses. Students in the program have access to a Virtual Lab where they can use various software tools, like SQL Server and R. Students must take 12 courses that are each 3 credits for a total of 36 credits.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire can also pursue the 36-credit online MS in Data Science that is part of the collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Extended Campus. Students in the program are able to pay the same tuition rate in-state or out-of-state. The program provides students with a background in multiple data science fields, including computer science, communication, math, and management. Specific course topics include data warehousing, strategic decision-making, data mining, big data, and ethics.

Marquette University

Marquette University in Milwaukee has several unique interdisciplinary analytics and data science programs. Students can take data and computer science courses as they pursue degrees such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science, an MS in Criminal Justice Data Analytics, an MS in Sports and Exercise Data Analytics, or an MS in Health Care Data Analytics. Some of these programs offer unique hands-on learning opportunities. Students in the MS in Sports and Exercise Data Analytics program can work with Marquette student athletes, and PhD students work with the Northwestern Data Science Institute. Some of Marquette's programs can be taken full- or part-time and may be offered in online formats.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers an MS in Statistics with an option in data science. The program requires 30 credits, including 6 credits of professional skills courses. For their professional skills courses, students can choose from a data science computing project, a data science practicum experience, or a course in professional skills in the field. This program is offered on campus, and students are expected to take courses throughout the week during day-time hours. The program is typically completed in 2 semesters, but students can take up to 3-4 semesters if taking classes in a part-time format.

Common Entrance Requirements

Students applying to graduate programs in data science within the state of Wisconsin usually need at least a bachelor's degree and may need to meet a minimum GPA requirement around a 3.0. Some of these programs may also require prior coursework in subjects like statistics, database administration, and/or computer programming. Although it is not usually required, it may be preferred if students have 3 to 5 years of professional work experience. Most of these programs specifically in data science do not require the GRE, while other programs in related fields, such as statistics or computer science, may require the exam.
