Graduate Degrees in Physical Education in Maryland

There are several institutions in the state of Maryland that offer graduate programs in physical education. Some programs may include teacher certification while others offer a focus of interest.

Students wishing to pursue certification as a physical education teacher or those working in this field who wish to expand their knowledge of physical education, can choose from a range of graduate programs in the state of Maryland. Options include graduate certification programs or degrees such as a Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), or a Master of Science (M.S.) in Teaching or Kinesiology. Maryland Schools Offering Graduate Degrees in Physical Education

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland at Shady Grove offers a Physical Education Master's Certification Program. This full-time program takes 13 months and is run collaboratively between the School of Public Health and the College of Education. Students take evening and Saturday classes while participating in a 12-month internship experience. They receive instruction for the pre-k, elementary school, middle school, and secondary level with a certified teacher. Upon graduation, students receive an M.Ed. degree and a specialist certification as a physical education teacher.

McDaniel College

McDaniel College, in Westminster, provides the opportunity to earn an M.S. in Teaching that can lead to certification in a number of subjects including physical education. Full-time students can finish the program in approximately two-and-a-half years of study. Students take a range of pedagogy classes, including topics in inclusive education and literacy, and also complete a field experience practicum. Fitness tests are also a part of the degree program.

Those who are already certified as physical education teachers can pursue an M.S. in Kinesiology at McDaniel. Courses are offered on campus, online, or in a hybrid delivery format. Students will complete core courses in areas such as statistics and sport psychology. They'll then choose a specialization in general studies, scientific perspectives, or administrative.

Morgan State University

Morgan State, located in Baltimore, offers an M.A.T. with a concentration in physical education. Students can choose to earn a dual bachelor's and master's simulteously in five years. For those who have already completed a bachelor's degree, the 33-credit master's program can be taken alone. Students may choose a further focus in health/recreation or sports administration, and must complete a 100-day internship.

Towson University

At Towson University, in Towson, students with a bachelor's degree can complete a teacher certification program in physical education. This certification program is offered through the department of kinesiology. Students complete the program in four to five full terms. Course topics may include creative movement, assessing physical fitness, and biomechanics. Eight-week capstone internships in both elementary and secondary schools are also required to provide a hands-on teaching experience.

Admission Requirements

Those who are applying to any graduate program in physical education must hold a bachelor's degree, and expect to submit transcripts. In addition, applicants might be asked to provide a statement of purpose, resume, and recommendations. Candidates should have some experience working with children, possibly in a tutoring or coaching capacity. Undergraduate coursework including exercise physiology, motor development, and physical education might be expected. Students may be required to pass standardized testing requirements, including the PRAXIS core, before beginning the program, and interviews may be expected.

Several programs in Maryland can help students earn graduate-level credentials in the physical education arena. Master's programs and certificate programs are available that can be completed in roughly one to two years.
