Overview of New York Graduate Degree Programs in School Psychology

Pace University

At Pace University, students can pursue a Master of Science in Education in School Psychology that takes a total of three years to complete. During the program, students take 69 credits that are split between coursework and training in the field. Some topics that are covered in the curriculum include developmental psychology, school clinical psychology, learning disabilities, and psychoanalytic theory. The field training in this program entails 1,200 total hours, 600 of which must be completed in a school setting.

Mercy College

Another option for students is the Master of Science in School Psychology offered by Mercy College. Within the program, students can pursue a 66-credit standard track or a 72-credit track that includes a bilingual extension. The curriculum is split into several different categories - psychological foundation, intervention, assessment, school psychology, and if applicable bilingual extension. Additionally, students must apply for an approved field placement in order to complete the requirements of the program.

Columbia University

This school offers both a Master of Education and a PhD that prepares graduates for careers as school psychologists. The Ed.M. program requires the completion of 69 credits over the span of three years. Students spend the first two years attending classes and some fieldwork opportunities and then engage in a full-time internship during the third year. The PhD program can be completed over five years. Students spend the first three years primarily completing coursework and an externship. The fourth year is dedicated to an internship, and the fourth year is focused on a dissertation.

Fordham University

At Fordham University, students have a few different options to choose from if they are interested in studying school psychology. Students may be interested in the Professional Diploma program in either school psychology or bilingual school psychology, both of which prepare graduates to be certified as school psychologists. Both programs require the completion of 66 credits over the span of three years. Fordham also offers a PhD in School Psychology which can be taken on a full or part-time basis. Full-time students can expect to spend five years completing the 96-credit program as well as a dissertation seminar and mentoring program.

Brooklyn College

This school offers a Master of Science in Education: School Psychologist. Students complete a total of 33 credits hours for the master's degree. Some topics that may be covered in the coursework include cognitive assessment, developmental psychopathology, and multicultural counseling. Students may add an additional 27 credits for an advanced certificate. Course topics include crisis intervention and neuropsychology, and social behaviors.

Admissions Standards

Graduate degrees in school psychology are available as master's and PhD degrees, and both of these require that students have at least a bachelor's degree in order to be considered. Students entering these programs are expected to have previously studied the field of psychology. When applying, students typically need to submit academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and CV or resume. GRE scores are usually required as well. Some schools will expect students to meet a minimum GPA.
