Schools in Colorado Offering Graduate Nursing Programs

University of Colorado

The University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora offers a variety of graduate nursing programs, including the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). If you plan to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, you can do this with a Bachelor of Science-DNP program, which does not require you to have earned any previous degree in nursing. The traditional DNP program is for nurses who already have a master's degree. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing program is also available, and you can enter this with or without a master's degree as well. If you wish to earn multiple degrees, a dual program can earn you a Master of Public Health along with your DNP. Program specializations, including post-graduate certificates, include the following:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Veteran and Military Health Care
  • Women's Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

University of Northern Colorado

The University Northern Colorado (UNCO) allows you to pursue multiple graduate degrees, in line with their view that each patient deserves an individualized treatment plan. The Master of Science in Nursing, with an emphasis on family nurse practitioner or adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner, is made for people who already have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). You can choose to attend your classes on campus or take your courses online. This program at UNCO emphasizes leadership and communication skills throughout your courses. Some of the course topics you might explore include acute care of adults, FNP clinical synthesis, and health care for women and children.

In addition to the MSN program, UNCO offers a Ph.D. in Nursing Education, as well as both BSN-DNP and graduate certificate programs in adult-gerontology or family nurse practitioner, are also available.

University of Colorado, Colorado Springs

The University of Colorado - Colorado Springs offers three online graduate nursing programs: a Post Master's DNP, an MSN, and a post-BSN DNP. The master's program has three tracks: adult/gerontology, family, and psychiatric-mental health. In either of the DNP programs, you will produce a scholarly manuscript that you might consider for publishing once you finish your requirements for the doctorate. Check the admissions page to find out if you are eligible to attend any of these programs from another state.

Colorado Christian University

If you already have a bachelor's degree in nursing, you can pursue an MSN at Colorado Christian University. Their program is entirely online for traditional courses, and comes with two concentration tracks: nursing education and clinical care management in adult and geriatrics. The degree is divided between 24 hours of core courses and another 15 for your chosen specialty track. The clinical choice includes 500 hours in a practicum setting, while the nursing education only requires 245 hours. If you attend classes full-time, you can finish the degree in 21 months.

Colorado Mesa University

At Colorado Mesa University (CMU), you can pursue three different levels of graduate education in nursing. There is a MSN, which contains at least 160 clinical hours to complete. The DNP in Family Nurse Practitioner will have you complete a total of 1,000 hours, mostly in a primary care environment. You might end up travelling to another location depending on your research project for the degree.

Admissions Requirements for Graduate Nursing Programs in Colorado

As a potential master's student in nursing, you need to hold a bachelor's degree. If your previous study isn't in nursing, you should focus your degree search on programs for people who have come from a different background. Your academic GPA should be at least a 3.0 regardless of subject. The GRE is not always required for admission into a graduate nursing program, but you should be sure to send all transcripts from tests and previously attended universities to your potential schools. For those pursuing a doctoral degree, you'll need to choose a specific pathway through a program before applying. Personal statements and statements of purpose should explain why you are a good fit for the university and why their specific program appeals to you.

Graduate nursing programs in Colorado offer many different specialization tracks, even if you have never taken a course in nursing. Expect to devote a lot of time to a clinical experience before you earn your graduate credentials as a nurse.
