Students who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in New York can find just a few relevant master's degree programs in the state. This article will highlight three of these programs by providing information that may be relevant to prospective students in order to help them decide which program is right for them and their future career or educational interests.

Graduate Programs in Graphic Design in New York

School of Visual Arts

The School of Visual Arts in New York offers students the opportunity to enroll in its Master of Fine Arts in Design program that is focused on graphic design, though it aims to help students expand their skillset beyond traditional graphic design. Students will learn how to turn their creative ideas into realities, since the program focuses on topics like content creation and entrepreneurship in addition to design-oriented coursework. In this program, students are required to complete 60 credit hours over two academic years. The first year is more skills-oriented, while the second year requires that students put their skills to use in order to conceptualize and then develop an idea as a final project, rather than completing a master's-level thesis.

New York Institute of Technology

Another option for students is the Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design program offered by the New York Institute of Technology. This program also requires that students complete 60 credit hours, 45 of which come from the required curriculum and 15 of which students can complete through elective courses. Students in this program are required to complete a paper and studio design project as part of a master's thesis in order to fulfill the requirements. When working on design projects and conducting research, students are able to access the HIVE facility, or Home for Innovation, Visualization, and Exploration, which is equipped with studio space and advanced design technology and equipment to help facilitate student work.

Oswego State University of New York

Students also could enroll in the Master of Arts in Graphic Design and Digital Media program at Oswego State University of New York. In this program, students are required to complete 30 credit hours over the span of two years. There are two tracks that students can pursue: specialist emphasis or generalist emphasis. The specialist emphasis is designed for students who have already achieved a bachelor's degree in a design-related area and allows for more in-depth and advanced study in a student's chosen area of interest, while the generalist degree is meant for students who do not have a strong design background. In this track, students study the design field more broadly to gain the necessary skills to be successful. All students in this program are able to select a medium to pursue, which could be print media, web design, or illustration, and the program requires that students complete 12 credits of elective courses in this selected area.

Admission Standards for Graphic Design Graduate Programs in New York

Students who would like to be admitted into a graduate program in graphic design in New York will need to fulfill some prerequisites in addition to submitting a complete application file in order to be considered for admission. While all programs may not require that students have previously completed a design-related bachelor's degree, it is expected that students will be able to submit a portfolio of their creative work as part of their application; this may be easier for students who have completed a degree in an area of design. In addition to submitting a portfolio, students will need to submit a completed application form, a resume or CV, undergraduate transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

To summarize, there are a few options for students who are interested in graphic design graduate programs in New York. These programs are primarily at the master's degree level and allow students to hone their skills and specific design interests through specialization areas and elective choices.
