Description of Online Schools for Oklahoma Students

There are a number of different online high school options available in Oklahoma. Below, we will look at five of these options in greater detail to help parents and students make an informed decision about what option makes the most sense for them. We will specifically look at course offerings, college readiness programs, and how the schools differ from one another.

View High School

View High School is a virtual high school that students can enroll in no matter what state they reside in, so Oklahoma students would qualify. This private school offers students a bit more flexibility as it has a variety of different pricing plans, allowing students to take an individual course or sign up for three-, six-, or twelve-month plans. Students can work with their instructors to set up schedules that allow them to complete their courses at different paces, which may be ideal for students who have other time-consuming commitments outside of school. While the course offerings are more limited than some other schools, View High School does offer core courses in English, math, science, and history.

Oklahoma Connections Academy

Oklahoma Connections Academy is a public online high school option for students who live in Oklahoma. In addition to the core courses required for graduation, Oklahoma Connections Academy offers its students a number of honors and Advanced Placement courses, as well as electives in subjects like foreign languages and journalism. Students also have the option of enrolling in Career Technical Education courses, which are designed to expose students to course material in various career fields, like criminal justice. Students can also participate in different clubs, like the College Planning Club, which is designed to help students begin preparing for college and thinking about their futures.

Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy

Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy is another online public school option for students who live in Oklahoma. This school offers over 150 courses for students to choose from, with each course offered at two different levels so students can be appropriately challenged. In addition to being able to earn college credit through Advanced Placement courses, students who enroll at Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy have the ability to earn up to 19 credit hours per semester to apply towards college while in their junior and senior year. Students can enroll in courses at local community colleges and then receive both high school and college credit for these courses, as long as they have completed the requirements set by the state of Oklahoma for graduation.

Oklahoma Virtual High School

Students in Oklahoma also have the option of enrolling in Oklahoma Virtual High School. This public school gives students the flexibility to complete courses at their own pace, receive individualized instruction, and choose from a variety of different courses. In addition to courses in English, science, social studies, and mathematics, students also can select from elective courses like web development, sociology, creative writing, psychology, and speech and debate. Oklahoma Virtual High School also offers a wide number of Advanced Placement courses to challenge students and give them the ability to earn college credit, depending on what school they attend.

Insight School of Oklahoma

Another option for students in Oklahoma is the Insight School of Oklahoma, a tuition-free public school. Students who enroll at Insight have the opportunity to participate in their Social and Emotional Learning program, in which students attend regular online advisory sessions where they get to know their instructors and fellow students with the intention of creating a more personal and relationship-driven educational environment. Students also receive and Individualized Learning Plan after instructors virtually meet with students and their families to discuss the student's goals, interests, and personality. Insight also offers a remediation program designed for students who need extra help and more access to resources.

State Regulations for Online Schools in Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, there are four public charter schools that are fully accredited and authorized by the state of Oklahoma school board. These schools are mentioned above, with Oklahoma Virtual High School being a branch of one of the four options, Epic Charter School. Students who enroll in these programs are required by state law to complete the same core course requirements as students enrolled in more traditional schools. These include four years of language arts, three years of math, three years of science, three years of history and social studies, two years of fine arts or speech, and at least eight electives.
