Step 1: Research Hawai'i Teacher License Information

In the State of Hawai'i, if you are already a licensed educator, you will either be renewing your standard license, which is good for 5 years, or your advanced license, which is good for 10 years. Before you renew your license, it may be useful to have a thorough understanding of Hawai'i's teaching licenses (if you don't already). Here are the requirements and some background information about each Hawai'i license:

Standard license requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience within the last 5 years in the U.S.A.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Finished Hawai'i-approved teacher-preparation program
  • Meets all NASDTEC Stage 3 requirements specific to the member jurisdiction

Advanced license requirements:

  • Standard license holder either in Hawai'i or another U.S. state
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience within the last 8 years in the U.S.A.
  • Master's degree or equivalent
  • Finished Hawai'i-approved teacher-preparation program
  • Meets all NASDTEC Stage 4 teaching requirements specific to the member jurisdiction

Step 2: Complete Renewal Application (For Hawai'i DOE Employees)

If you are currently employed by the Hawai'i Department of Education, once your teaching license is up for renewal, you will get an email from the state of Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board with instructions.

First, log in to your account on the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board website. Go to the 'My Profile - Licenses/Permits' tab. Then, under that tab, click on 'Renew License.'

Finish the application. Once you've turned it in, the state of Hawai'i will make ensure that you have everything you need in order to renew your teacher license.

Step 3: Fill Out Extra Paperwork (If You Aren't A Hawai'i DOE Employee)

If you aren't employed by the Hawai'i Department of Education, you must fill out several additional pieces of paperwork online. These can all be found on the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board website.

First, print out the RA4010 document - 'Verification of Experience for Renewal Form.' Your director or principal has to fill out this form.

Next, you must complete the RA5010 document - 'Verification of Satisfying the Hawai'i Teacher Performance Standards.'

Once this paperwork is finished, log in to your account and go to 'My Profile' and 'Documents.' Under the 'Renewal Compliance' documents, upload these completed forms. Then, under 'My Profile' and 'Licenses/Permits,' click on the 'Renew License' button. You will then fill out an online license renewal application and submit it.

Step 4: Pay Fee

It costs $54.00 to renew your teaching license. There's also an additional online processing fee of $2.00, so your total will come to $56.00. Any late payments will be charged an additional $25.00, so make sure you pay on time.

To make the payment, log in to your online account. Then go to 'My Profile' and look under 'Fees/Payments.' You are able to use debit or credit cards (for credit, MasterCard, VISA, or Discover only). You can't pay in cash or with a card over the phone or via mail.

Once you've paid the fee, your license will automatically be issued. You can showcase your refreshed teacher license on the HTSB Public License Search at this time. Also, you are now able print your fee receipt and as well as your renewed license.

That's it! Now you're all set to continue your teaching career with a renewed State of Hawai'i license.
