HBCUs, or historically black colleges and universities, are a select set of institutions founded in order to ensure that Africa-American students can achieve a higher education degree. Many of these HBCUs now offer online MBA programs, some of which we will discuss in detail below.

HBCU Online MBA Programs

Florida A&M University

Florida A&M University's online MBA program is designed for the working professional and mixes online lectures and classes with opportunities for collaborating with other students. This is a one-year, 43-credit hour program with coursework that will touch on such topics as organizational behavior, logistics management, leadership skills, and corporate social responsibility. All course materials and textbooks will be included in e-book format, and you will be able to use a university laptop during your first semester. The online MBA program also offers a real world, international residency that will allow you to study and learn from multinational companies.

Jackson State University

The online MBA from Jackson State University is a 30-33-credit hour program that can be completed in one year with five, eight-week term periods. This program will also allow you to work during the course of your studies. The online MBA shares the same faculty as the on-campus option as well. Some of the required coursework you will need to complete includes such areas of study as accounting in terms of finances and management, economics, and organizational behavior.

Delaware State University

Delaware State University offers an MBA program that can be completed through online distance education courses, which use Blackboard, an online educational portal. This 30-hour program can be completed in 12 or 18 months, depending on the number of courses you decide to take any given term. The school also offers courses during the summer semester. In terms of coursework, you will need to take several core classes that will touch on everything from strategic management to operations analysis.

Alcorn State University

Alcorn State University offers a generalized MBA that is made up of both online classes and online/hybrid classes that can be attended in-person or online through Blackboard. With the 36-credit general MBA, you will take courses in advanced topics, including entrepreneurship, international business, and tax planning. The university also has a specialty MBA that is 100% online. This MBA degree allows you to choose a concentration in gaming management or hospitality management. You will need to earn 30 credits, including 12 credits in your choice of specialization.

Morgan State University

Morgan State University also offers an online MBA program. This is a 36-credit program that you will be able to complete in two years. You will need to take nine core courses in topics such as international business, organizational ethics, and corporate finance. After that, you will be able to specialize your MBA by taking three electives in the realm of accounting, marketing, finance, supply chain management, or information systems.

Common Admittance Requirements

Some of the common admittance requirements to these types of online HBCU MBA programs include holding a bachelor's degree and submitting an application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a resume. Most of these programs, but not all, will also require that you have professional work experience. The number of years of experience will vary by program with some requiring only two years and others requiring five years. Similarly, each program has different GRE or GMAT requirements with a majority of programs requiring test scores and others that will offer a GRE or GMAT waiver. It's important to consult individual programs for the exact requirements.

If you are a working professional or someone who can't attend on-campus classes, there are many options for you to earn your online MBA. Several HBCUs offer this type of online program, which can allow you to earn your MBA in only a year or so.
