Career Information for High Demand Careers with Short-Term Training

Solar Photovoltaic Installers

With the BLS forecasting 105% growth from 2016 to 2026, solar photovoltaic installers are expected to see the highest job growth rate out of all occupations. While it's an option for these construction professionals to pursue training for a postsecondary certificate, they are only required to have a high school diploma and on-the-job training. Some apprenticeship options are also available. These installers attach solar panels to roofs and other structures and ensure that they are set up properly to provide solar-powered energy.

Wind Turbine Technicians

Wind turbine technicians can prepare for their career by earning a postsecondary certificate in wind energy technology. Their job involves installing wind turbines and performing routine maintenance to ensure the turbines continue to work properly. Much like with solar photovoltaic installers, the growing interest in green energy sources has put wind turbine technicians in high demand: from 2016 to 2026, the BLS expects wind turbine technicians to see a 96% job growth rate.

Home Health and Personal Care Aides

Home health and personal care aides visit individuals who are ill or disabled and provide services that enable those people to live at home. Personal care aides perform non-medical duties, like cooking and cleaning; home health aides do the same, but they also perform healthcare services like administering medication and changing bandages. A high school diploma is normally required, and some short-term postsecondary training may also be necessary to work in this field, although a postsecondary certificate is not required. The job growth rate expected for these workers from 2016 to 2026 is 40%, per the BLS.

Derrick Operators, Oil and Gas

Oil and gas derrick operators primarily learn through on-the-job training, and candidates do not even need a high school diploma or GED to enter this field. Their work involves inspecting, maintaining and repairing derricks used for oil and gas drilling. Over the ten-year period from 2016 to 2026, the BLS expects oil and gas derrick operators to see a 26% increase in job openings.

Bicycle Repairers

Bicycle repairers can enter the field with a high school diploma or GED, and they learn their trade once employed. They are responsible for repairing bicycles and may also perform bicycle maintenance and assembly. They also have some sales duties, and bicycle repairers often help customers choose the appropriate bike for their needs. A 29% job growth rate is expected for bicycle repairers from 2016 to 2026, according to the BLS.

Community Health Workers

Community health workers are expected to see an 18% job growth rate from 2016 to 2026, per the BLS. This is the fastest growing career option in the social services field that does not require a degree. Community health workers help identify the healthcare needs of community members and help those people access care services. A high school diploma and on-the-job training are required to become a community health worker; it is also an option to complete a postsecondary certificate to prepare for this career.

Medical Assistants

Medical assistants perform a combination of administrative and patient care tasks that can involve everything from scheduling appointments to taking a patient's vital signs. Some specialize in administrative duties, while others concentrate on assisting with patient care. Medical assistants with a high school diploma may receive on-the-job training, or individuals may opt to complete a postsecondary certificate to prepare for this career. The BLS indicates that the projected job growth rate for medical assistants is 29% from 2016 to 2026.
