What is a Home-School Liaison?

Home-school liaisons act as an intermediary between schools, parents and students. Liaisons may work with immigrant families who do not speak English, help new students adjust, and assist students with special needs. The main goal of a home-school liaison is to make sure the student succeeds. Responsibilities include communicating important information to students, parents, and school staff, setting up home visits and office meetings with parents, checking in with teachers on student performance, organizing community events that benefit families, referring students and families to special services, and managing programs such as parenting classes and English classes.

Required Education

Typically, a high school diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement to become a home-school liaison. Some employers may prefer candidates with some post-secondary education. Work experience with youth, teaching, community organizations or social services is often important for an aspiring home-school liaison, whether or not you have higher education. Bilingual applicants are commonly sought after, so taking a language class can be beneficial to your career.

Required Skills

A home-school liaison must have excellent written and oral communication skills. They will need to communicate with students, families, teachers and other school staff, alike. Interpersonal skills are also paramount. It is essential for liaisons to have a successful rapport with students and families, so that everyone involved has a pleasant experience with the school. A liaison can act as a mediator between parents and teachers such as, sitting in on parent-teacher conferences or mediating issues either party is having. Organizational skills and understanding of basic computer functions will come in handy when coordinating events, managing files on each student and setting up meetings or home visits. Home-school liaisons may also need to serve as a translator to parents who are immigrants or do not speak English, and having bilingual skills can be extremely valuable to this position.

Career Outlook and Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of all teacher assistants, which could include home-school liaisons, is estimated to grow 8% from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment of these positions is dependent on the budget of each school district but federal funding for education programs and the growing immigrant population may help spark more growth. The BLS also reports that the median salary for all teacher assistants in May 2018 was $26,970.
