What is an Herbalist?

Herbalists can work in a wide variety of settings and have knowledge about botanical medicine and how to put it into practice. They generally advise and provide patients with different herbs and plant medicines in efforts to improve their ailments. Herbalism is an alternative form of treatment that patients seek out as opposed to the typical over-the-counter medicines or prescriptions that might be suggested by a general medical practitioner. Many of the steps below may be followed through online means.

Steps To Becoming An Herbalist Online

The following steps should arm you with the knowledge to begin pursuing a career in the world of herbalism and natural healing. Each of these include an online component.

Step 1: Join the American Herbalists Guild Online

Anyone may join the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) online as a general member. Although you aren't technically required to obtain any official licensing to become an herbalist, many active practicing herbalists are members of the AHG. Being a member of the AHG can offer information about training programs and a sense of professionalism that may be an effective tool to use when you begin searching for clients. An AHG membership offers access to the online platform where you can listen to herbalism lectures and reach out to other practicing herbalists, to learn more about the field as you prepare and later while you are practicing.

Step 2: Complete an Online Herbal Course

In order to become a registered herbalist with the AHG, you will need to complete a minimum number of hours in herbal education and mentored clinical work experience. To help with this, the AHG offers a mentorship program so that you can gain hours in an herbal clinic environment under a registered herbalist. There are different online herbal schools to choose from, as well as other online courses that offer the required information and resources needed to obtain the necessary knowledge to pursue a career in herbalism. Topics might include medicinal preparations and how to run an herbalist business. Upon completion of your online herbal education and in-person clinical hours, you may apply to the AHG for your registered herbalist credential.

Step 3: Explore Employment to Begin Practicing

One of the handiest and simplest ways to begin your career in herbalism is to simply upload your resume and portfolio to several online job posting websites to search for employment that fits your skill set. Another way of using online resources to find employment could be reaching out to members of the AHG and see if they know of any herbalism opportunities that you might pursue. You could also advertise your services online or take your resume into a local acupuncturist or other natural health practitioner in an attempt to work with them and provide their clients with natural herbal care.
