Steps to Become a Holistic Nutritionist Online

Most of the steps required to become a holistic nutritionist could be completed online. The basic procedure to become a practicing holistic nutritionist is as follows:

Step 1: Consult With the Appropriate State Board Before Opting for an Educational Program

Each state has its own rules and regulations for practicing nutrition. Before opting for an educational program, it would be a good idea to do some research and make sure the program you choose helps you follow the professional career you desire. Based on this, you can plan your educational path, the certifications and the licenses required in order to become a practicing holistic nutritionist in your specific state.

Step 2: Choose the Online Program Required

Based on the research done in the previous step, you could choose an appropriate education program. Some colleges and universities offer the Bachelor of Science degree in Holistic Nutrition online. In addition to the online courses, a certain number of hands-on hours of documented experience would usually be required. There are also certificates that may be opted for, based on your interest. Common courses include basic biology, anatomy of the human body, special diets, dietary supplements and herbal studies.

Step 3: Complete the Required Certifications and Licenses

Once your program is completed, each state has its own procedures that should be followed in order to become a licensed dietitian/nutritionist. Sometimes, extra certifications might be required before you qualify for the license. In this case, they must be completed before you apply for the license in the specific state in which you wish to practice. Check with the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP), which features the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board (HNCB).

Step 4: Consider Additional Certifications

While the required certifications and licenses are necessary to practice holistic nutrition, considering an additional course or a certification may be helpful, such as that of nutrition coach. These could provide an advantage over other applicants when you apply for jobs or when you begin your practice. Due to the highly competitive nature of this field, additional certifications may be recommended for a wide reach.

Step 5: Start Applying for Jobs

Once you have completed your basic qualifications and received a license, you can start applying for jobs. This could be done even when you are in the process of earning your additional certification. Initially, internships could be considered in order to gain some experience in holistic nutrition. Some wellness firms offer online jobs, which could provide the option of working from home. Holistic nutrition can also be practiced independently, once the required amount of experience is gained.
