Step One: Meet Requirements for Kindergarten Teacher Education

The Delaware Department of Education requires kindergarten teachers to earn a degree in early childhood development from a regionally accredited university program. Human development, development of literacy, diversity in families, and children at risk are just some of the topics these future teachers will be exposed to.

Some schools offer various field experiences beyond the student teaching work required by the state for certification. This includes observation and practicum opportunities in a kindergarten classroom. In fact, there are universities that have a childhood lab on campus, which allows students to work with children without traveling away from the university. There is also a final year of student teaching, during which teaching candidates lead a classroom with the help of their host teacher. When applying for certification, candidates will have to provide their transcripts to prove this education.

In addition to student teaching, kindergarten teachers in Delaware also have to take a performance test, and they can choose between two options. The first requires them to earn a 38 on the Praxis -Performance Assessment for Teachers. Test-takers complete four tasks, which demonstrate their knowledge of professionalism, assessment, and student learning, as well as their ability to develop lesson plans. Candidates upload the test elements through online submission during key points in their student teaching experience. Similarly, the edTPA also requires a passing score of 38. This is a portfolio assessment that offers an opportunity for candidates to upload a video of themselves teaching in a classroom, in addition to other teaching materials they have created.

Step Two: Pass Certification Exam Requirements for Kindergarten Teachers

To teach children from birth to second grade in Delaware, candidates have to pass the computer-based Praxis - Education of Young Children exam with a score of 160. It takes about 150 minutes and includes 120 multiple-choice questions, as well as three short-answer questions. These focus on topics such as: childhood development, assessment, family and community connections, and teaching procedures.

Delaware also requires future teachers to pass the Praxis - Core Academic Skills for Educators test. It has three subtests, which include reading, writing, and math. To pass the reading portion with the required 156 score, candidates will answer 56 multiple-choice questions regarding key ideas and language structure. The writing section requires a score of 162 and includes topics like types of writing and research. Finally, the math section includes 56 questions that focus on algebra and geometry, and the passing score is 150.
