Online Steps for Becoming a Life Coach

Although there are many different organizations and certifications associated with life coaching, the career is relatively unregulated and there is no official standard for life coach certification. Below you will find a list of concrete steps you can take towards becoming a life coach. All of these steps can be completed online except for some optional credentialing and networking.

Step One: Complete an Education

There is no formal degree for life coaching, nor is a postsecondary education necessarily a requirement. That said, having at least a bachelor's degree in any number of related degree areas can demonstrate to potential clients a level of ability and qualification. Degrees that have to do with health/nutrition and counseling, or degrees such as business, communications, or marketing might be helpful for equipping you with the kinds of knowledge and skills you will need while working as a life coach. They can also give you some helpful business know-how should you choose to start your own life coaching business. Luckily there are distance learning degree programs through which you can earn a bachelor's degree online.

Step Two: Train and Practice

Although there are no official training requirements for this degree, focused training and practice can help those wishing to become life coaches to advance one step further toward their goals. There are online video tutorials that are freely available with information on being a life coach from successful professionals in the field, as well as information on how to start a life coaching business. Optionally, training is offered from a number of private institutions such as the International Coach Federation (ICF). ICF offers a free online training program search service.

Step Three: Consider Certification

ICF is considered a legitimate credentialing organization, and has different certifications each of which evaluate a person's standard of ethics and overall competency. Credentialing isn't a career requirement, and there are working professionals who have no such certification. Still, being certified has the potential to bring you one step closer to becoming competitive as a professional life coach. Being certified can make you a more desirable candidate for schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals looking for a life coach.

Step Four: Engage in Networking

Networking is a great way to break into the field to become a life coach. Those wishing to be life coaches can attend seminars not only to gain knowledge from professionals in the field, but also to begin networking with people in the industry. Sometimes people starting out even take on a mentor to help learn first hand. Luckily there is some networking that can be done online. Social networking, blogging, and building a website are great ways to introduce yourself to the world, explain what you have to offer, and hopefully land your first clients.
