Step 1: Complete Educational Requirements

If you wish to teach math in Alabama, you will need to complete a bachelor's degree from a teacher preparation program that has been approved by the Alabama Department of Education. The department provides a listing of all of the approved teaching training programs on their website.

All teaching candidates in the state of Alabama will need to take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CASE) tests in order to enroll in a teacher preparation program. This series of tests will demonstrate your proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics. You will need to earn the following passing scores: 156 in reading, 162 in writing, and 150 in mathematics. You can take the tests individually or all at once.

You can pursue a Bachelor of Science in mathematics education, which will qualify you to teach students in grades sixth through twelfth. Coursework for this degree can include calculus, an introduction to advanced mathematics, and abstract algebra.

Step 2: Fulfill Certification Requirements

The second test you will need to take is the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12. This test requires a score of 153 or higher to pass.

Finally, you will need to take a subject-specific Praxis examination for your desired teaching level of mathematics:

  • Mathematics (Grades 4-8) Middle School Mathematics: Passing score is 148
  • Mathematics (Grades 6-12) Content Knowledge: Passing score is 145

You will also need to receive a clear fingerprint check from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Step 3: Obtain Teaching Credentials

Once you meet the educational and certification requirements, you will be able to apply for your initial teaching certification. You will either be certified to teach mathematics in Grades 4-8 (middle childhood math) or Grades 7-12 (secondary math).
