In the State of Ohio, once an individual has completed the required steps, they can be commissioned by the Government to act as a Notary.

Steps to Become a Notary in Ohio Online

The steps required to become a notary in the State of Ohio can be completed almost entirely online, however, there are certain in-person requirements such as taking fingerprints for the background check.

Step One: Complete a Background Check

Individuals who would like to become a notary in the State of Ohio will need to go through a Webcheck provider to get the background check. Individuals can research the best location for them to attend, by using an online government portal that can be found on Ohio's Secretary of State's site. Applicants can attend an appointment in person, which can be made online or by phone prior, or as a walk-in. Applicants will be provided the results of their records.

Step Two: Complete the Education Requirement and Pass the Exam

Notary candidates need to complete the state-approved 3-hour long Notary Education and Exam through an approved vendor. The Ohio State website provides a list of eligible vendors, which individuals can use to choose from. Once selected, candidates will be required to sign up to the vendor and arrange for payment of the fees, after which they can complete the course online. After the course has been completed and the requirements satisfied, applicants will be able to complete the exam straight away. Applicants can also elect to take the course and exam in-person if they wish.

Step Three: Fill Out the Application and Pay Any Necessary Fees

The application can be found and completed online via the Ohio Secretary of State's website. In order to fully complete the application, the individual needs to create a new account with basic information such as mailing address, upload a copy of the background check, certificates of education and testing completion through one of the approved providers, and an image of the person's signature. A fee is also required to process the application and that can be paid via the online portal as well.

Step Four: Receive Government Commission and Purchase Notary Stamp

Once the application is accepted and approved, the Government will send an email with instructions regarding the oath of office. After the oath is completed, the new notary is required to buy Ohio's notary stamp, which he or she can purchase online. It is suggested to also buy a journal to keep track of notarizations.
