What an Aromatherapist Does

Aromatherapists use essential oils to create relaxing environments in which they treat their clients, either through inhalation of the oils' aroma or by application of the oils to the client's skin. When dealing with clients, aromatherapists must be able to put them at ease and communicate the benefits of the use of aromatherapy in clear language. Most of the steps involved in becoming a certified aromatherapist can be undertaken online, and only the certification examination will need to be taken in person.

Steps Involved in Becoming an Aromatherapist Online

In this section, persons will learn how they can become certified aromatherapists using what is available to them online. Where their resource options are concerned, students may be able to complete the required training programs entirely online.

Step 1. Complete an Anatomy and Physiology Program

This particular step is only relevant for persons who don't have experience in the field of healthcare. Persons without this experience can enroll in an online certificate program that focuses on human anatomy and physiology with only a high school diploma or GED. These programs can consist of at least 12 credits and include topics like the immune system, the nervous system, and the cardiovascular system.

Step 2. Complete an Approved Aromatherapy Program

Whether the individual has experience in healthcare or not, they will be required to complete an aromatherapy program that is approved by the Alliance of International Aromatherapists (AIA) or the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). The programs must have at least 200 contact hours to meet their requirements, with many of the aromatherapy programs available online slightly exceeding the minimum. In these programs, students may learn about business practices as well as the foundations of aromatherapy, and programs can take nine months to complete if the student is enrolled full time.

Step 3. Apply for AIA or NAHA membership

Before moving on to certification, persons will need to become members of an existing association. Both the AIA and NAHA are open to persons who are either enrolled in or have just completed an aromatherapy program. Either membership application can be completed online.

Step 4. Apply for the Certification Exam

Having completed online training, persons can then apply to take the Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC) certification exam. This application can be made through the ARC website, which will confirm the individual's eligibility and then allow an examination date to be scheduled. When applying to take the exam, persons will need to submit proof of their training, a Candidate Consent Form, as well as an agreement to the ARC disciplinary policy. The application and examination fees may be submitted through the mail.

Step 6. Take the Exam

The main guide for the exam's content is the ARC candidate handbook, which can be found online. The examination consists of 250 multiple-choice questions, which candidates have four hours to complete. Proper identification will be needed to take the exam, and it can take up to four weeks for the results to be ready.

Step 7. Confirm Certification

Once the results of the test are ready, they will be sent to ARC as well as to the candidate by mail. Candidates who have passed the exam will need to contact ARC to ensure the information for their registry listings are complete and accurate.
