Career Information about IT Jobs for People Without a Degree

Help Desk Technician

Help desk technicians are also often known as computer user support specialists. They take customer calls, usually in a call center or a home office, and help users diagnose issues their computers are having. They will usually ask a line of questions and then offer ideas for how to resolve the problem. Help desk technicians need some college classes in computers, but not a full degree.

Web Developer

Web developers use programming languages and codes to create websites. After making the website, they often monitor traffic to the site. They are responsible for the appearance and feel of a website and may create things to go on the site, such as sound and images. Although many web developers have an associate's in this field, a degree is not required for all positions.

Computer Salesperson

Computer salespeople work in retail locations to sell computers to consumers. Their job is to assist customers in making the best decision, such as showing them how different features work, giving them advice on different models, and then helping them check out at the register. They don't need any formal education, though employers sometimes like to see at least a high school diploma, and on-the-job training is common.

Telecom Technician

Telecom technicians are skilled at repairing and adjusting communication wiring within offices and homes, as well as other types of buildings. They make sure all the equipment is working well, show customers how to use it, and keep records of what they do. Telecom technicians don't need a formal degree, but they do usually need some training in this field, often through a computer technology or telecommunications certificate program.

Technical Writer

Technical writers often work with computer specialists and others in the IT industry to write instructions and manuals for companies. In order to write accurately, they study the products they are writing about. They might use graphics to achieve an easier user interface. They may also offer advice to creators to help make products easier and require a lower amount of instructions. Although many technical writers do have a bachelor's degree in a writing field, there may be positions available that require only experience with certain IT products.
