Career Information for IT Jobs in Hotels
Hotels often need to store large amounts of data, including financial information for guests and reservations, and may need a database administrator to organize and oversee this data. Another important aspect of their role is that database administrators must make sure that these databases of information are secure from hackers or even employees who are unauthorized to view them. Database administrators routinely test and backup databases to make sure they are working properly and no data is lost. These professionals need a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
Network and Computer Systems Administrators
Since almost every organization utilizes computer networks for internet and communication purposes, network and computer systems administrators are needed in hotels to ensure that these networks are working correctly. They must determine which software and hardware their particular organization needs to function and then maintain these networks with any necessary upgrades and fix any issues that arise. These administrators also manage the security settings for the networks, and therefore, have to allow permission and train new employees how to use the hardware and software. Network and computer systems administrators usually need a bachelor's degree, but some positions may only require a certificate or associate's degree.
Almost every hotel or lodging establishment utilizes a website for advertisement and information for guests, which requires a web developer to create the site. They will typically meet with upper management of the hotel to talk about how they want the site to look and function, and then begin writing code and creating content for the site. They may also incorporate video and graphics and usually help maintain and update the site as needed. Web developers may need a high school diploma, associate's or bachelor's degree depending on the position, but usually need to understand graphic design and programming.
Information Security Analysts
In today's world with the increasing number of cyberattacks, a hotel or hotel chain may hire an information security analyst to evaluate their security measures and help keep their information safe. These analysts will set up a variety of security measures, such as firewalls, to secure private information, typically pertaining to a hotel's guests and finances. Information security analysts will then carefully watch for any signs of a security breach, update security measures as needed and perform tests to try to identify any weakness in security. They usually need to have some work experience and a bachelor's degree.
Computer and Information Systems Managers
Hotel chains or larger establishments may employ computer and information systems managers to oversee the wide range of computer- and technology-related projects. These managers need to identify and prioritize an organization's technology needs and then begin implementing any necessary upgrades and obtaining any necessary software or hardware. They may need to make hard decisions about which projects to pursue based on the available budget and short- or long-term goals of the organization and also oversee the various IT employees involved in a particular project. Computer and information systems managers must have some related work experience and at least a bachelor's degree, but many hold a graduate degree.
