Information about Careers for Assertive People

Wholesale and Manufacturing Sales Representative

Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives typically work for large companies that produce wholesale and manufactured goods. They are in charge of finding new clients who are in need of these goods, explaining the features of the products, negotiating deals, and managing existing accounts. Because sales representatives may have to seek out new clients though cold-calling and also must sell as much product as possible, it is helpful for these individuals to be assertive in order to establish new client relationships and negotiate good deals. To become a wholesale and manufacturing sales representative, you may only need a high school diploma, though having a bachelor's degree can be helpful, especially if your degree is related to the type of product you are selling.

Retail Sales Worker

Retail sales workers assist customers who are shopping in different types of stores that sell items like clothing, furniture, and cars. You will be responsible for helping customers find what they are looking for, answering any questions they may have about products, and operating a cash register to help customers purchase items. Some retail sales workers work off of commission based on the volume of products they are able to sell, in which case being assertive may help sales workers sell more products. To become a retail sales worker, you will generally only need a high school diploma.

Management Analyst

As a management analyst, you will typically be hired as an outside consultant by organizations and businesses to help them solve various problems related to their efficiency and profitability. Some of your responsibilities could include observing how the organization functions, talking with employees and managers, making recommendations for improvement, and monitoring changes made. Being assertive in this position is helpful, as management analysts may have to compete for jobs and then must be capable of working with company managers and provide them with honest recommendations. To become a management analyst, you will typically need at least a bachelor's degree, though having a master's degree may be helpful for securing a job.

Human Resources Manager

Human resources managers work in many types of businesses and organizations and are responsible for all of the personnel who work there, as well as a variety of other administrative duties. They are typically responsible for recruiting and interviewing new employees, overseeing training programs, and managing any type of employee disputes or disciplinary proceedings. Because these individuals are in a management position and may have to deal with sensitive topics like firing employees, being assertive is helpful in this role. To become a human resources manager, you will typically need at least a bachelor's degree in a field like human resources or business management, along with work experience.

Police Officer

As a police officer, you will be responsible for making sure that individuals are kept safe and are abiding by city, state, and federal laws. Some of your responsibilities could include responding to emergency calls, making sure drivers follow laws on the road, patrolling neighborhoods and parts of the city, and writing reports at crime scenes. In this position, being assertive is an asset, as police officers commonly must take charge of tense and stressful situations and often deal with individuals who are not cooperating and irate. To become a police officer, you will need at least a high school diploma before completing a police training program.
