Information About Jobs for People with Borderline Personality Disorder

Technical Writer

As a technical writer, you will be responsible for writing different types of technical documents, like how-to guides, technical journal articles, and assembly instructions for different pieces of equipment or furniture that are intended to make complicated information simpler for the average user. This job may be a good choice for individuals with BPD, as technical writers may work on a freelance basis, and some work from home, allowing them the ability to have more flexibility and not interact with people as often. Also, technical writers may work on a number of different types of projects with varying content and focus areas, which could be helpful for individuals who may struggle with their ability to focus. To become a technical writer, you will typically need to have a bachelor's degree in a field like English or journalism, and having knowledge in a field like engineering or computer science would also be helpful.

Grounds Maintenance Worker

If you enjoy being outside and also have BPD, you may want to consider a job as a grounds maintenance worker. In this position, you will be responsible for maintaining the lawns and grounds of residential areas, like neighborhoods and houses, as well as parks and businesses by mowing grass, landscaping, and making sure plants stay healthy. Grounds maintenance workers may be able to work on their own, which may be good for individuals with BPD. In addition, groundskeeping work is often seasonal, so it could give individuals with BPD the opportunity to take breaks in their work schedule if needed. To become a grounds maintenance worker, you generally don't need any formal education, though you may receive some on-the-job training.

Web Developer

Web developers are the minds behind the design and creation of websites, including both the front-end and back-end design. Some of their specific responsibilities may include writing code, creating applications for the website, creating graphics and an attractive website interface, and keeping track of how many web users visit a website. While web developers do work with their clients in order to understand their expectations for a website, they work primarily on an independent basis, and a number of them are self-employed, which may work for people with BPD.

Baker

Individuals who are interested in working in the food industry may want to pursue a career as a baker. As a baker, you will be responsible for making all of the pastries, breads, and various other baked goods for a restaurant, grocery store, or bakery. Bakers are often scheduled to work early shifts before other employees or customers arrive so that the bread is prepared in time, which may be good news for someone with BPD, as it would allow him or her to work independently. To become a baker, you will typically need to complete on-the-job training, or you could choose to attend a culinary school.

Medical Scientist

Medical scientists are medically trained specialists who typically work in a clinical or laboratory environment conducting research. Some of their general responsibilities may include setting up clinical trials, testing new medical devices, writing research grants, and analyzing various medical samples. Academically-minded individuals with BPD who are interested in completing many years of schooling may be interested in a position like this, as medical scientists spend most of their time conducting research and may not often have to interact with other people if they have poor interpersonal skills. To become a medical scientist, you will usually need a Ph.D. in a field like biology, though you also may get an M.D. degree.
