Career Information for Jobs in Video Games with No Experience

Multimedia Artists and Animators

Multimedia artists and animators are not required to have related work experience or any on-the-job training to design and create the animations for video games. These professionals typically conduct some research in order to create realistic animations with various computer programs, as well as to help develop storyboards for the game. After creating their initial animations, they edit their work based on feedback from the director or other artists on the team. Multimedia artists and animators need to maintain a professional portfolio of their work and hold a bachelor's degree in art, computer graphics or a related area.

Sound Engineering Technicians

Sound engineering technicians usually undergo some short-term on-the-job training, but do not need previous work experience to work on the sound for video games. These technicians use computers and sound equipment to record, mix and synchronize the various sound effects, music and other sounds throughout the game. They usually keep records of the different recordings they make and may edit recordings as needed using a computer. Sound engineering technicians usually need a postsecondary nondegree award or an associate's degree.

Computer Programmers

Computer programmers do not need prior work experience or on-the-job training to help program the various aspects of a video game. Programmers may program the computer-controlled opponents in the game, the graphics throughout the game, how the games are played online and other aspects, all while using different computer languages to make designs come to life. Computer programmers also test their codes to make sure that they are working properly and make any necessary corrections. These professionals usually need a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, but some positions may only require an associate's degree.

Writers and Authors

Writers and authors do not need work experience in a related career, but typically undergo long-term on-the-job training to build their repertoire. Writers and authors may help create the storyline for the videogame and/or the script for the characters in the game. In general, writers and authors usually research the subject of their writing to help them create authentic details and then work with an editor to finalize their work. These professionals need a college degree, and although experience in the field is not required, it can be helpful.

Actors

Like writers and authors, actors are not required to have previous related work experience, but undergo long-term on-the-job training to perfect their craft. Most video games contain some dialogue between characters, which usually needs to be recorded in the studio using actors' voices. Actors typically need to audition for their roles and then develop their characters and rehearse their lines before recording their performance. They are not required to have a formal education, but many pursue a bachelor's degree and/or long-term training.
