Coaches and Scouts

Coaches and scouts may use sports statistics and math calculations to evaluate players. Coaches may use sports statistics to monitor players' progress and performance in the sport and then tailor their practices and game-time decisions based on the information. Scouts may use sports statistics and math to evaluate players and then try to recruit the ones that they think are most qualified to play for their particular team or school. Coaches and scouts usually need a bachelor's degree and complete understanding of the particular sport they work with.

Reporters and Correspondents

Some reporters and correspondents may specialize in reporting on sports and sport-related events and could use sports statistics and math in their research for stories. They may report on the sports statistics for players or teams in particular games, as well as interview coaches, players and others involved in the event to inform their audience about what occurred. Reporters and correspondents may work for newspapers, websites, television broadcasts and other media, and therefore, may write their stories or present them on camera. These professionals need a bachelor's degree and some experience in the field, like that obtained through an internship.

Radio and Television Announcers

Similar to reporters and correspondents, some radio and television announcers may provide commentary during or about a sporting event and use sports statistics in their research and/or some quick math calculations during their sports reporting. These announcers may have a show specifically devoted to sports or cover sports and other topics, like news or music. Radio and television announcers may also interview guests, prepare and/or read off of scripts and make promotional appearances at different events as necessary. These professionals usually need to gain experience from an internship and have a bachelor's degree in broadcasting, journalism or a related field.

Historians

Some historians may study the history of a particular sport, a sports figure or other historical aspects of sports and use sports statistics and math in their research. They may study old sports statistics and record books, as well as other sources like books and artifacts, to write about the past of a sport or player. Historians also help educate the public about historical topics and may assist museums, including sports museums, with their displays and preservation issues. Most historians need a master's or doctoral degree for research positions.

Statisticians

Statisticians work in many different fields and some may work as sports statistical analysts for sports organizations. They use sports statistics and math to evaluate players and try to predict performance, which is often used in the recruiting and trading processes. In general, statisticians determine which data is needed, develop ways to collect it and then analyze the data with statistical models. Statisticians may be able to find entry-level positions with a bachelor's degree, but usually are required to have at least a master's degree.

Gaming and Sports Book Writers and Runners

Gaming and sports book writers and runners may use basic sports statistics and math as they oversee bets on sporting events. These workers must check tickets and pay out winning tickets, as well as record bets. They also are responsible for monitoring the cash that comes in for bets and the winnings that are distributed. Gaming and sports book writers and runners need good customer-service skills and a high school diploma.
