Information about Jobs Requiring German Language Skills

Translators work to transfer one written language into another. As a translator for German, you would be trying to preserve as much meaning as possible from the original document in the translation. Translators do most of their work online, receiving and submitting files on a computer. To be a German translator, you must be fluent in the language. Some translators specialize in certain types of translation, such as medical or legal, but many translators work with a variety of types of documents. German translators often need a bachelor's degree as well as fluency in both German and English (or another language they are working in).

German Professor

German professors teach college courses in German, either language or literature or both. Generally, college professors do both teaching and research, and German professors are no exceptions to this. Like other college professors, German professors generally must plan out classes, grade papers, publish their research, join committees, and so on. Having German language skills is important for becoming a German professor. Professors generally need a Ph.D., though sometimes only a master's is required to teach at a community college.

High School German Teacher

High school German teachers teach German to high school students. Like other foreign language teachers at the high school level, German teachers need German language skills. They perform other tasks common to high school teachers, such as creating lesson plans, evaluating students, grading assignments, meeting with parents, and more. Like other high school teachers, they need at least a bachelor's degree and state certification where required.

International Airline Pilot

International airline pilots transport passengers on airplanes over long distances, often overseas, for airline companies. Having German language skills is important when flying to Germany or other European countries where German is spoken, such as Austria or Switzerland, when doing things like greeting German passengers. Airline pilots have knowledge about how the plane behaves as they make sure everything is in order before taking off or landing. Airline pilots need a bachelor's degree, the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, and a commercial pilot's license.

International Ship Captain

International ship captains oversee all the workings of a ship or other type of sailing vessel, performing a variety of tasks to do so. They make sure everything is safe, manage the crew and budget, keep records, and so on. Sailing in international waters means that it is possible captains will be assigned a particular region or country where German is spoken, which will require interacting with people of those nationalities. Having German language skills ensures correct communication in these cases. Ship captains need a series of certificates and credentials, although no formal degree is necessary. They need a certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard and also sometimes the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and the Merchant Marine Credential (MMC).
