Career Information for Jobs that Involve Creativity and Design
Fashion designers design various articles of clothing and accessories and must utilize their creativity to make unique pieces for consumers and/or retailers. They typically choose a theme for their various collections and may use tools like computer-aided design (CAD) programs to prepare their designs. Some fashion designers work with teams to create their pieces, but generally have the final say over their designs, the fabric that is used, the final production of their design and other creative factors. Most fashion designers need a bachelor's degree and knowledge of the production process.
Architects use creative thinking when designing and planning various buildings and structures for their clients. Although their creativity may be slightly limited by the client's or structure's requirements, these professionals create original designs and oversee the construction process to ensure that the plans are followed. Architects also make sure that their designs stay within a specific budget and may handle any construction contracts that are needed. Architects need a bachelor's or master's degree in the field and then need to pursue licensure through completing a paid internship and passing the Architect Registration Examination.
Interior designers use their creativity to design and decorate the insides of homes, offices and other areas. They work with their clients to plan the furnishings, fixtures, lighting, layout and other factors of each room or space. Like architects, these professionals must work within a specific budget, estimate a timeline for the project and oversee the process to ensure that the client is satisfied with the end result. Interior designers typically need a bachelor's degree in the field.
Industrial designers use creativity to bring innovation to new and old products that we use every day. They may design new and/or improved cars, toys, appliances and more, while considering factors like production costs and function. Industrial designers usually begin with computer designs and creating a prototype that allows them to evaluate the safety, consumer appeal and practicality of a product. These professionals need at least a bachelor's degree and usually maintain a professional portfolio of their designs.
Graphic designers design creative advertisements, logos, illustrations and other visual concepts for clients. They typically use various kinds of software to plan layouts of magazines, edit photos and create digital images. Graphic designers must carefully check their designs for errors and usually have to have their final designs approved by the client and/or art director. Graphic designers also maintain a professional portfolio and need at least a bachelor's degree in the field.
Art directors use their creativity to develop and maintain a particular visual style in their designs for magazines, movie productions, packaging and more. These professionals also oversee teams of graphic designers and other design staff to complete their projects, and usually make the final creative decisions after figuring out how to express a particular concept or idea. Art directors must stay in close contact with their clients to meet the clients' needs, as well as to update the client on timelines and budgets. Art directors may have worked another creative job, such as graphic designer, prior to becoming a director, but must have at least a bachelor's degree.
Floral designers, or florists, use their creativity to design beautiful floral arrangements using living or silk flowers and plants. Some florists may grow their own flowers and make suggestions to customers about which flowers may be best for the client's particular style, needs and budget. Florists must be organized to plan deliveries and complete orders, but can be fairly creative with the flowers, ribbons and other accessories they use in their displays. Floral designers usually have a high school diploma and learn on the job.
