Career Information for Jobs that Involve Math and Art

Architects

Architects use art in their drawings and designs of the various buildings and structures they work to design, and they also use math in their cost estimates and calculations for the structure specifications. Architects must work closely with their clients to understand the needs of a specific project, as well as with engineers and other professionals working on the project to coordinate activities and ensure construction follows the intended designs. Architects typically use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and building information modeling (BIM) for their designs, which they may present to clients for approval. To obtain licensure, architects must have a professional degree in the field, complete an internship and pass the Architect Registration Examination.

Fashion Designers

Fashion designers use art to sketch out and plan their various fashion designs, and may need to use basic math for measurements, inventory and cost estimates, as well as some business math for the selling of their products. Fashion designers create clothing, accessories or footwear that they may display at fashion shows and/or sell to consumers or retailers. These designers usually have a theme for each of their collections with various colors, patterns and fabrics, and typically oversee the production process. Fashion designers need at least a bachelor's degree and an understanding of the production process for apparel.

Interior Designers

Like fashion designers, interior designers often sketch and artistically plan their designs and use math to estimate costs, ensure correct amounts of inventory and calculate various measurements. Interior designers specialize in planning and designing indoor spaces of homes, businesses and other organizations according to the needs and desires of their clients. They may plan everything from paint colors to furnishings and fixtures, and handle many of the logistics in placing orders for materials and sticking to timelines and budgets to ensure customer satisfaction. Most interior designers need a bachelor's degree in the field.

Statisticians

Statisticians' jobs revolve around statistics, a type of math, and they usually need to use basic forms of art to present their findings through charts, graphs and other visual aids to make their work more understandable for others. Statisticians work to solve problems in a wide variety of fields by collecting and analyzing data with different statistical methods. They may help design experiments or surveys used to collect data and then report their conclusions to solve issues in areas like engineering, science or healthcare. Jobs are available for statisticians with bachelor's, master's or doctorate degrees in the field, but most need at least a master's degree.

Fine Artists

Fine artists obviously utilize art in their jobs, but some fine artists may also incorporate math into their artwork through complex patterns, sequences and designs. Fine artists can specialize in many different techniques, like painting, sculpting or drawing, to create beautiful pieces of artwork to display in a gallery or to sell to clients. These artists experiment with various colors, perspectives and other visual techniques to add to their portfolio and attract new clients. Fine artists usually need a bachelor's or master's degree in fine arts to remain competitive.
