Meeting, Convention and Event Planners

Some obvious careers that plan events include meeting, convention and event planners. These planners oversee all the details of events for their clients, including the time, location, transportation and services surrounding the event. They review bills, coordinate food, inspect the venue and ensure that their client and guests are satisfied with the event. These professionals generally need a bachelor's degree and some experience with planning events.

Social and Community Service Managers

Social and community service managers plan social service programs for their communities. They work to first identify the needs of a community and then meet those needs through the programs and community organizations within a determined budget. These managers also spend a large amount of time analyzing the effectiveness of their programs and planning outreach activities to increase awareness of available programs and services. They need at least a bachelor's degree, but many positions require a master's degree.

Postsecondary Education Administrators

The job duties of postsecondary education administrators vary depending on the area in which they serve, but several areas, including admissions, the registrar's office and student affairs, require administrators to plan different events for students. They may be responsible for helping plan admissions events and orientations, graduations and student programming. Especially in the area of student affairs, these administrators may need to create and coordinate nonacademic events and schedule various events and programs with the institution. Most of these professionals hold a master's degree or higher, but some entry-level positions may only require a bachelor's degree.

Fundraisers

Fundraisers specialize in planning events and campaigns for an organization that are intended to raise money or donations. This requires them to carefully research available donors and reach out to them with an original and strong fundraising message. Fundraisers also track donations, oversee volunteers and evaluate the effectiveness of events. They need to have at least a bachelor's degree; good communication and organization skills are also necessary.

Lodging Managers

Lodging managers in general hold many responsibilities to keep their establishment running efficiently. Convention service managers in particular oversee the activities of an establishment to host special events and conventions. These managers meet with members of the group to help them plan their meeting space and figure out what additional services they will need, such as food or audiovisual equipment. They also handle any incidents that occur during the event to satisfy their clients. Most lodging managers need a bachelor's degree, but some may find positions with only an associate's degree, certificate or high school diploma and experience.

Travel Agents

Travel agents specialize in planning the details of various kinds of trips for their clients. Working within their clients' budget, these agents reserve travel, accommodations and different activities for business trips and/or vacations. They may also need to make last minute changes and offer advice to their clients concerning attractions, weather and customs of a particular area. Travel agents need at least a high school diploma and may need to undergo formal training.
