Career Information for Jobs that Involve Creativity and Imagination

Fashion Designers

Fashion designers use their imagination and creativity to visualize unique and different designs for various articles of clothing and accessories. These designers generally choose a theme for their collections and select the materials and fabrics for their pieces. Fashion designers oversee the production of their designs and may sell their pieces to consumers and/or retailers or display them on the runway in fashion shows. These professionals need a bachelor's degree in the field and a good understanding of the production process for clothing.

Actors

Actors often have some creative freedom as they develop the characters they represent in plays, television shows, movies and other productions. They also use their imagination, plus advice from the director, to place themselves in the character's position and figure out how the character may react to particular situations. Actors usually have to audition for roles and then must memorize their lines and participate in rehearsals. A degree is not required, but most actors have a bachelor's degree and participate in long-term training to perfect their skills.

Writers and Authors

Some writers and authors, especially those who write fiction, use their imagination and creativity to write original stories, poetry, advertisements and other written works. These professionals may conduct some research to include authentic details in their work, but many writers and authors have complete creative freedom for their writing. They typically work with an editor to get feedback and prepare their work for publication. Writers and authors generally have a bachelor's degree and experience in the field.

Fine Artists

Similar to fashion designers, fine artists use their imagination to visualize their ideas while adding their own creativity and style into their work. These artists may work in a wide range of media, including painting, sculptures, illustrations and more. Fine artists maintain a professional portfolio of their work to attract clients, as well as displaying their work in galleries or marketplaces. Fine artists typically hold a bachelor's or master's degree in the field and perfect their craft through practice.

Childcare Workers

Childcare workers must use their creativity to plan age-appropriate activities for the children they care for, which often include some element of imagination and pretending. These workers may care for multiple children of varying ages while their parents are unavailable; therefore, their tasks may include changing diapers, feeding the children, helping children with homework and more. They also carefully monitor the children to keep them safe and watch for any developmental or behavioral issues. Childcare workers may need certification in early childhood development, but education requirements depend on the state in which they work and the employer.

Choreographers

Choreographers combine imagination and creativity to visualize and create unique dances to various kinds of music and styles. They often audition dancers to perform their dances and may plan everything from the music and lighting to the costume designs. Choreographers are responsible for teaching the dancers the complex movements and sequences they have created and may have additional responsibilities within the dance company. Education requirements vary, but choreographers generally begin their career as dancers and have years of formal training.

Directors

Directors make all of the creative decisions for movies, television shows, plays and other productions, and they use their imagination to visualize the desired look and feel of the final project. Directors usually participate in the hiring of the actors and oversee the work of the crew and cast. They supervise the production and postproduction processes, like lighting, performances, editing and special effects, to ensure that the project stays true to the original concept and vision. Directors need a bachelor's degree and years of experience in the field.
