Social Workers

Social workers usually need a bachelor's degree in social work, though clinical social workers will need a master's degree.

Social and Community Service Managers

If you are interested in developing programs that are geared towards the homeless, you may be interested in becoming a social and community service manager. In this role, you will be in charge of identifying various issues or problems in your community and developing and managing programs that help alleviate these problems. You may create a program that aims to connect homeless people with various resources, like housing, food, and job and educational opportunities. To become a social and community service manager, you will usually need a bachelor's degree as well as some work experience.

Social and Human Service Assistants

As a social and human service assistant, you could choose to work specifically with homeless people. This job would entail helping these individuals secure housing, either temporarily or permanently, providing them with resources for finding a job, and connecting them with places where they can find food like soup kitchens. To become a social and human service assistant, you will typically need a high school diploma and will usually need to complete some on-the-job training.

Registered Nurses

Nurses work in hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices and provide patients with medical attention and care. Nurses who work in hospitals that are located in large cities may sometimes encounter homeless people who are experiencing some sort of illness or who are in need of medical treatment. You will assess their condition, take down their personal information, and work with other health professionals to develop a treatment plan depending on their reason for coming to the hospital. To become a nurse, you will need to pursue either an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing.

Adult Literacy and High School Equivalency Diploma Teachers

As an adult literacy and high school equivalency diploma teacher, you may work with homeless people who were never able to learn to read and write properly or who didn't attend or finish high school. Your responsibilities will include working with students to determine their level of education and then developing lessons and curriculum that help students improve their reading and writing skills and obtain their GED. You may work in conjunction with a community outreach program to develop classes geared specifically to the homeless. To become one of these teachers, you will typically need at least a bachelor's degree and training in adult education.
