Career Information for Marketing Careers in the Film Industry

Marketing Managers

Marketing managers in the film industry work to develop marketing campaigns for movies and try to reach out to new markets of consumers for particular films. They may also provide their studio or production company insight into how much consumers are willing to pay for a movie and what kind of movies are most popular at the time. Marketing managers usually oversee marketing staff members and need to work closely with other departments, such as advertising and public relations. These professionals need some work experience in the field and at least a bachelor's degree that includes coursework in finance, management, economics or related fields.

Market Research Analysts

Market research analysts may perform some similar research as marketing managers into potential markets and consumer habits pertaining to the film industry, but they examine these topics more in depth. They may collect data and examine marketing and sales trends of movies over time to provide film production companies with detailed reports about what kind of movies people are seeing. They usually use statistical software to analyze data, and they and may also discern information about competitors in the film industry and evaluate how well current marketing strategies are working for the organization. Marketing research analysts need great analytical skills and at least a bachelor's degree in market research or a related field, but certain higher-level positions require a master's degree.

Public Relations Specialists

Public relations specialists in the film industry may represent production companies, movies or actors to help promote and market them and ensure that their public image is a positive one. They often work alongside marketing staff to establish consistency with the desired public image in marketing campaigns and handle most of the communication with media and the public. They may provide the media with information about the movie, help handle any publicity surrounding actors in the film and monitor social media and other platforms to track public opinion. These specialists must hold a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications or a related field.

Producers and Directors

Although their primary duties do not pertain to marketing, producers and directors still play an important role in the marketing of a production. Producers typically need to market the film they are working to raise funding for the production. They oversee the financial decisions pertaining to the film. Directors handle more of the creative decisions, including directing actors and crew members. They are also involved in helping to promote or market the movie before its release with interviews and promotional appearances. Both positions usually require some work experience in the field and at least a bachelor's degree in film, journalism, art management or a related field.

Actors

Similar to producers and directors, actors' primary responsibilities are not usually marketing-related, but they typically play a large role in the marketing campaigns of a movie. Actors audition for specific roles in a movie production and, once cast, they rehearse their lines and conduct any necessary research that may help them further develop their character. Once they have filmed their scenes and the movie is set to release, most actors participate in numerous interviews and promotional events to market the movie and generate interest in consumers. Actors undergo long-term training and, although they are not required to have a formal education, many choose to earn a bachelor's degree in the performing arts.
