Step 1: Complete Education Requirements

Middle school math teachers need a strong academic foundation in mathematics and education. There are approved postsecondary programs that emphasize all core middle school subjects, including mathematics, or that focus on mathematics and science. Students who are planning to teach mathematics will need to complete core mathematics courses in algebra, geometry and calculus. They will also take education courses that equip them with the skills needed to effectively teach mathematics to this age group.

Other academic course requirements include courses in biology, chemistry, history, literature and child development. While completing undergraduate studies in an approved program students will also learn about the philosophy of education and complete student teaching practicums to gain experience instructing students.

Step 2: Complete Basic Skills Certification Requirements

Maryland teacher certification requires applicants to pass two testing areas. The first is called the Basic Skills tests, or Praxis Core. These tests evaluate the applicant's skills in mathematics, reading and writing. Passing scores of 150, 156 and 162 are needed, respectively.

It is also an option to score 1100 or higher on SATs, earn a 24 or higher on ACT or get a score of 297 or more on the GRE to fulfill this part of the certification requirements.

Step 3: Fulfill the Content and Pedagogy Requirements

In order to teach middle school mathematics, graduates from an approved postsecondary program only need to pass the Middle School: Mathematics test with a score of 165 or higher. This test emphasizes the assessment of the applicants knowledge of algebra and arithmetic. It also tests their knowledge of geometry.

Step 4: Apply For Certification

Fill out an application form to receive your Maryland teacher certificate. You must include proof of graduation from an approved postsecondary program and passing scores on the certification tests. You are also required to include a letter that contains information that confirms your identity and specifies which certificate you are seeking. Initial certificates are valid for five years. Those who are employed by a school in Maryland will receive the Standard Professional Certificate I, while those who fulfill all the requirements but are not yet employed by a school in Maryland will receive the Professional Eligibility Certificate.
