Master of Biomedical and Health Sciences Program Information

Pursuing a Master of Science in Biomedical and Health Sciences (MSBHS) combines medical-based coursework with research practices to prepare students to enter fields in cancer biology, pharmacology, dental, infectious diseases, neurosciences, and stem cell research. Typically a challenging and selective program, the general MSBHS curriculum is provided below.

Microbiology

Microbiology studies microorganisms and their specific disciplines including bacteria, parasites, mycology, fungi, and viruses. Specifically, the course illuminates pathogens and the subsequent human responses, as well as genetics and mycotic infections. Explored pathological concepts will include cell injury and repair, inflammation, and cell adaptation.

Pharmacology

Courses in pharmacology illustrate principles and classes of specific drug types, as well as their toxicology. Additionally, students will learn drug interactions and systematic processes involving digestion within the body and their biological receptors. Taking pharmacology prepares students to become familiar with medication administration and their effects on the human body.

Nutrition

Students will learn to diagnose specific diseases and recognize their mechanisms and symptoms. The course places a heavy emphasis on clinical and laboratory findings in a professional work environment.

Master of Biomedical and Health Sciences Admittance Requirements

Students looking to apply to an MSBHS program must have obtained a bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduate transcripts will need to be provided upon admission. Other requirements include two to three letters of recommendation, a letter of interest, a resume, and GRE results. Other standardized tests, such as the MCAT or PCAT, may be substituted in place of the GRE. Additionally, there may be some prerequisites courses required if students do not hold an undergraduate degree in a related field, such as General Chemistry I & II, General Biology I & II, Organic Chemistry I & II, and Physics I & II.

By pursuing a master's degree in biomedical and health sciences, students can become well versed in diseases and their treatments, as well as various biological functions on the microscopic level. Even if a student's undergraduate education is not in a related field, they can still be eligible to enter this program by taking some prerequisite courses.
