Universities in Colorado offering an MFA

Western Colorado University

Students can obtain an MFA in Creative Writing from Western Colorado University. Various genres are offered for concentration including nature writing, screenwriting for film & television, and genre fiction. To give an idea of the type of coursework offered, some sample courses from the nature writing concentration include History and Genres of Nature Writing, Poetics of Nature Writing, and Intro to Creative Nonfiction. Sample courses from the genre fiction concentration include Western Speculative Young Adult Fiction and Romance, Mystery, and Fiction. MFA students attend three summer residencies lasting two weeks each. The program culminates in a thesis project of book-length or a final portfolio. MFA students take two courses per semester of six credit hours in length online in addition to the residencies. The residencies are held in July on the university's Gunnison campus.

Regis University

The Mile-High campus of Regis University offers a low residency model to achieve an MFA in creative writing. Students attend two residencies per year, each lasting a week. The residencies include panels, workshops, seminars, and opportunities to connect with fellow scholars and writers. The program is 54 credit hours in length, but the residencies are a part of this credit hour requirement. Required core coursework includes writing semesters, residencies, a critical essay, and an MFA thesis. Highlights of the program include an opportunity to study remotely in Ireland and the chance to take courses in fine arts such as painting or drawing.

The University of Denver

An MFA in Emergent Digital Practices is available from the University of Denver. Some courses include Rapid Game Design and Prototyping, Game Design: Paper to Digital, Designing Social Good, and Site-Specific Installation. Although the program is a three-year program, the credit hour load is a hefty 92-credit hours. 24 of those hours are art history, seminars, and emergent digital practices courses. 20 are in graduate critiques and 12 are in exhibitions. A final exhibition and in-depth paper finish the program. The program sets students up to pursue careers in emerging digital art such as being a game designer, multi-touch display artist, open hardware creator, exhibition coordinator, and more.

The University of Colorado Boulder

The University of Colorado Boulder is a prestigious name in the arts community and offers an MFA in Art Practices. They offer several mediums to students including film, painting and drawing, ceramics, printmaking, photography and digital media, and post-studio management. The entire program is 54 credit hours, of which 36 need to be completed on campus in Boulder. It takes approximately two and a half years to complete the curriculum, including 6 credit hours of a thesis, 3 credit hours in a graduate art seminar, and 3 credit hours in a visiting artist seminar. Electives include studio and non-studio hours, but students must take art history, film studies, or art theory. Course titles that fulfill the art theory requirement include Critical and Theoretical Issues in Museum Studies, Artists' Ways of Knowing, Remix Culture, and Art After Metaphysics.

Colorado State University

Colorado State University offers an MFA in the traditional media of painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, and printmaking, but they also offer MFAs in fibers and metalsmithing and jewelry making. Credit hours required for graduation vary from 48-60. Some transfer credits may apply. Various periods of art history are available for study including Baroque and Rococo, Greek, Renaissance, 18th, 19th, and 20th century European, West and Central Africa, Pacific art, and more. 6 credit hours of art history and 12 of electives are required for the program, as well as a group study in multimedia and 9 credit hours in thesis work.

Program Admittance Requirements for an MFA in Colorado

GPAs are set at a minimum of 3.0 for most programs, although some prefer a 3.2 or higher in the field of study. Portfolios demonstrating the applicant's aptitude in the field are standard for MFA applications. Letters of recommendation, artist's statements, personal essays, and transcripts are all documentation usually provided in an application to an MFA program. Most of these programs will require GRE scores, but not all do. Due to the low student to faculty mentor ratio in MFA programs, selection tends to be highly competitive, especially for well-established programs.

Colorado State offers several fine opportunities for graduate students to earn an MFA. Western Colorado University, Regis, The University of Denver, Colorado State University, and The University of Colorado Boulder all offer rigorous MFA programs in fields ranging from creative writing to emergent digital media.
