New York Schools with Master's Programs in Biomedical Engineering
The City College of New York
The City College of New York in New York City has a Master of Science (MS) in Biomedical Engineering that totals 30 credits. Students in the program take core courses in biomedical engineering, math and biomedical science or non-biomedical engineering electives and the program concludes with a master's thesis or a master's project. The school also has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical Engineering that requires a dissertation. Students are usually only accepted into the PhD program if they are able to secure a fellowship or teaching/research assistantship.
New York University
New York University, also in New York City, provides an MS in Biomedical Engineering that offers three different tracks. Students can focus their studies on bioinstrumentation, biomaterials or medical imaging and all the tracks require a total of 30 credits. Each track offers a thesis option or a guided research option and students must maintain a B average in their courses. Students can also choose from a range of elective courses to pursue personal interests in subjects like bio-optics, statistics, bioethics and immunology.
Columbia University in the City of New York
Columbia University in the City of New York offers an MS in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering program. Students can also pursue an MS-leading-to-PhD or dual Medical Doctor (MD)/PhD in Biomedical Engineering program. The traditional MS program gives students unique research opportunities in a wide range of areas and offers flexibility in coursework and project options to allow students to pursue their interests. The traditional PhD program requires a dissertation and 30 credits beyond the MS program.
Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University in Stony Brook has an MS in Biomedical Engineering with a thesis and non-thesis track and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. The MS with a thesis requires at least 39 credits, while the non-thesis, project option requires at least 33 credits. Students in the MS program can choose from concentrations in areas like biomedical design, biomedical entrepreneurship and biomedical principles. The PhD program requires a dissertation and a teaching practicum.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute offers an MS and Master of Engineering (MEng) in Biomedical Engineering, as well as a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. The master's degree programs can be completed in 1 to 1.5 years and the MS requires a thesis while the MEng only requires coursework. The PhD program can be completed in 4 to 5 years and requires a dissertation. Students in the PhD program can earn an MS along the way and the coursework is similar, but has a significant amount of additional research requirements.
Common Entrance Requirements
Biomedical engineering graduate programs in New York generally require applicants to hold a bachelor's degree in a science or technical field, such as engineering, chemistry, biology, physics, computer science or some health sciences. Students are also typically expected to have prior coursework in areas including linear algebra, statistics, chemistry, calculus and biology. These programs may have a minimum GPA requirement and usually require GRE scores. Other common application materials for these degree programs include official transcripts, multiple letters of recommendation and a personal statement explaining career and/or research goals and a student's interest in the program. Some programs may also ask for a detailed resume or CV.
