New York Institute of Technology

The New York Institute of Technology College of Engineering and Computing Sciences offers a master of science degree in data science. The goal of the program is to train data scientists who can help businesses use data to make smart decisions. It consists of 30 credits, with a thesis and a non-thesis track. Courses cover topics including computer programming for data science, machine learning, big data and more.

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers a master of science degree in computer science with the option for a concentration in data science and engineering, which is designed to prepare students to become data scientists. This New York State University focuses on preparing students to analyze data to solve real-world problems. It includes courses in machine learning, big data analytics, statistics, data mining and more. The broader master's degree in computer science is 31 credits, and to complete the data science concentration, students need to complete at least four courses in the subject and complete a relevant advanced project or thesis course.

SUNY Old Westbury

This state university has a master of science degree program in data analytics, which is part of data science. This 36-credit program takes four semesters to complete, and it has evening classes so both full- and part-time students can take part in the program. Long Island University at C.W. Post (LIU Post)

Long Island University offers a master of science in data analytics and strategic business intelligence at its C.W. Post campus. They will take courses in data science, big data analytics, and more, as well as graduate-level courses in accounting, business administration, information systems and more. It will culminate in a capstone experience for students to apply what they learn to the real world.

Program Admission Requirements

Most schools prefer applicants to already hold a bachelor's degree and preference may be given to those who have experience of engineering or computer science at an undergraduate level. If students do not have necessary experience, they may be able to make this up by taking prerequisite courses. In addition, a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher is required, but a 3.0 or higher is preferred. Whilst GRE scores are not always required, it can act to strengthen applications, especially where cumulative GPA scores are lower. Most programs will want to see a statement of purpose, official transcripts, a resume and some recommendation letters on application
