Michigan Universities With Master's Degree Programs in Data Science

University of Michigan - Dearborn

The University of Michigan's Dearborn campus offers a Master of Science degree in data science. It's a 30-credit program that consists of required core courses, elective courses and a final capstone project. Core courses cover big data, data mining, data modeling and more. If they wish, students can pick a concentration in computational intelligence, applications, business analytics or big data informatics.

Wayne State University

Students at Wayne State University in Detroit can earn a Master of Science in Data Science and Business Analytics degree. This 30-credit program is a joint offering of the university's school of business and college of engineering. Its goal is to teach students not only about the technical skills of data analysis and the data analysis life cycle, but also about critical thinking, communication and teamwork. This program has three different concentration options: advanced analytics, data computing and data-driven business. All three programs end in a practicum so students can apply what they've learned to a real-world problem.

Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant offers a Master of Science in Applied Statistics and Analytics program that will give students the skills they need to interpret big data and apply it to any industry, and it places a focus on students completing research projects. It's a 30 to 36 credit program, depending on if students need to complete 6 credits of prerequisite courses, and it is designed to be completed in two years. The program requires coursework in data mining, statistical programming and more. Students choose an applied statistics or analytics track, which will determine other required courses.

Grand Valley State University

Grand Valley State University in Allendale offers a Master of Science degree in data science and analytics that is designed to prepare students to work with and interpret data for various industries. The coursework covers statistics and computer information systems and also includes an internship. It's a 36-credit program with classes in the evening, designed for professionals.

Michigan Technological University

A 30-credit Master of Science in Data Science program is also offered at Michigan Tech in Houghton. The courses cover data mining, business analytics, predictive modeling and the basics of data science. From there, students can pick foundational courses and then elective courses. Part of the program involves taking domain-specific courses, that have to do with specific fields like biomedical engineering, forest resources and environmental science, social sciences and more.

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan's flagship campus in Ann Arbor offers a Master of Science in Data Science that provides students the technical skills to analyze and interpret data and the expertise to apply what they learn to different fields. It is a 43-unit course load with core courses in data management and data science techniques, and with elective courses in principles of data science, computation and data analysis. It also ends in a capstone project.

Program Admission Requirements

Specific admissions requirements to a MS in Data Science degree program vary by school. The universities will generally ask for a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, a resume and official transcripts; some schools may also ask for GRE or GMAT scores. Some require an undergraduate GPA of a 3.0 or higher, and some schools may require or prefer applicants who have a bachelor's degree in a STEM subject. Prerequisite coursework generally includes calculus, linear algebra, statistics and programming. However, some programs will accept students on the conditions that they complete prerequisite courses before starting the master's degree program.

In general, students looking for a data science master's degree program in Michigan have several school options to choose from. All of these graduate programs focus on math, statistics, computer programming and the applications of data in the business world.
