Minnesota State University, Mankato

Minnesota State University, Mankato offers a Master of Science in Data Science degree program that features coursework in such subjects as machine learning, database management, and statistical computing. The number of required credits will depend on which capstone experience you choose. The thesis option requires 32 credits, the alternative plan paper option requires 34 credits, and the graduate internship option requires 36 credits. You will be able to earn your MS in Data Science within two years at this school.

University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis has a Master of Science in Data Science degree program that requires 31 credits. You can choose to complete your degree in three or four semesters. Your coursework will likely include data mining, database systems, parallel computing, and regression analysis classes. You must also complete a final capstone project that consists of solving a real-world data problem.

The College of St. Scholastica

In Duluth, The College of St. Scholastica offers a Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics degree program that is designed to be completed in about two years, with 37 credits needed. This program features 8-week classes that are completed online. Your coursework will include foundational classes in data analytics and data storage as well as specialized and advanced classes on data strategies, machine learning, and text mining. A capstone project is also required.

University of St. Thomas, Minnesota

At the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota in Saint Paul, you can earn a Master of Science in Data Science degree in about three years. Required courses in this program include classes on artificial intelligence, software engineering, and big data management. This degree requires 36 semester credits. The University of St. Thomas' MS in Data Science does not require a capstone or thesis.

All data science master's degree programs require that you have earned a bachelor's degree, with the minimum GPA needed varying by program. Also, some programs could require your undergraduate degree to be in the field of computer science, statistics, math, or a related field; however, not every program has this requirement. Many programs, but not all, also require prerequisite coursework in statistics, computer programming, and other mathematical subjects. Generally, GRE scores are not required, although a limited number of programs do require them.
