New York Master's in Data Science Programs

The City University of New York

The City University of New York, located in New York City, offers a 30-credit MS in Data Science degree that is designed to be completed in 2 years. In this program, you will most likely take courses on such topics as big data analytics, machine learning, and data mining. Your elective courses could center on 3D photography, modeling, and other subjects. You will also need to complete a capstone project to earn your data science degree, and The City University of New York's program gives you two options: you can either complete a research project or an internship within the data science field.

Columbia University

Also located in New York City, Columbia University has an MS in Data Science degree program that can be completed in 1 and a half years if you attend full time; part-time enrollment is also possible. In this 30-credit hour program, you could take core courses on algorithms, modeling, statistics, and data visualization. This program will also allow you to choose a specialized elective track in cybersecurity, health analytics, or smart cities, among others, which also pairs with one of the university's research centers. You will also be required to complete a capstone project on a data science topic that will allow you to work with a faculty member while you conduct your own research or with a local organization.

New York University

The MS in Data Science degree program at New York University, which is located in New York City, is a 36-credit hour program that you could take 2 years to complete. This data science program offers different tracks that will specialize you in biomedical informatics, biology, physics, natural language processing, mathematics and data, or big data. While your electives will depend on your chosen track, your core courses could focus on probability and statistics, machine learning, deep learning, and linear algebra. To complete your degree, you will also be required to complete a capstone project that will be centered on a real-world data science problem that is meant to mirror possible problems that you would come across in your future career.

New York Institute of Technology

With campuses in both New York City and Long Island, the New York Institute of Technology's MS in Data Science degree program will require 30 credits for completion. This program's core curriculum may include classes on big data, programming, machine learning, and the Stochastic processes. Your electives will be chosen in conjunction with your program advisor so that you pick the right data science classes that fit your career goals. You will also be able to choose a thesis or non-thesis option; although, the non-thesis option will still require a written project based on your own research interests.

University at Albany, State University of New York

In Albany, the University at Albany, State University of New York offers a 36-credit MS in Data Science degree. This program is designed to cover the three major fields that make up data science, including statistical methods, machine learning, and topological data analysis. You could possibly take core courses on those subjects along with courses on nonlinear programming, modern computing, and linear algebra. You will not need to complete a thesis in this program; however, a capstone project that includes research and data analysis, an oral presentation, and a poster presentation is required.

Common Admittance Requirements

Most MS in Data Science degree programs have a common set of admittance materials that will include an application, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores for international students. Also, many programs will also require that you have a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Some programs will also require prerequisite coursework, including courses in statistics, linear algebra, and calculus, among others. There are a few programs that will also require fluency in a programming language as well; although, some programs will not have this requirement.

To earn an MS in Data Science, you will need to take core courses that touch on everything from machine learning to statistics and will most likely need to complete a research-focused capstone project. To apply to this kind of program, it's recommended that you already have an undergraduate background in computer science.
