Information for Master's in Urban Education Programs
Some master's programs in urban education offer concentrations in secondary or elementary education, and many programs do not require a thesis but may culminate in a final capstone project and include hands-on teaching experiences. Courses in these degree programs vary, but here we discuss a few of the more common courses.
These courses explore some of the foundational concepts of urban education, beginning with a historical perspective of the subject. Students may explore urban social institutions, race and ethnicity, politics and structure in urban education. These courses usually include various case studies, class discussions and lectures.
Students in these courses explore a variety of factors that impact urban schools alongside issues specific to these institutions. Topics discussed may include political, social, economic, historical and even anthropological factors. These courses are usually lecture-based but may also require literature reviews and critiques.
Urban education programs may offer various courses in educational leadership to further develop students' teaching abilities. Some of these courses offer an overview of the history and theory of educational leadership, while others focus on current research-based applications. Topics of study in these courses include classroom organization, interpersonal relationships and the different frameworks that impact administration, such as social and economic.
Courses in educational assessment train students to use a variety of assessment tools in the classroom and apply assessment data to instruction. Students also explore the use of assessments in a variety of settings, including traditional classrooms, educational social networks and e-learning environments. Students further develop their instructional planning skills, data analysis skills and knowledge of assessment design.
Most master's degree programs in urban education include at least one seminar course that is usually taken toward the end of the program. These seminar courses require students to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the program to the analysis of current issues in urban education. Students in these courses may conduct extensive literature reviews, lead class discussions and/or give oral presentations.
Common Entrance Requirements
It is fairly common for master's degree programs in urban education to have a minimum GPA requirement of around 3.0. Some programs also require applicants to demonstrate proof of immunizations before working in the education systems and/or a minimum score on a Praxis exam. Most applicants to these programs are required to submit the appropriate application, as well as their official transcripts and letters of recommendation. Many programs also ask for a current resume and/or a statement of purpose and personal essay.
Master's degree programs in urban education help prepare students to work with children and adolescents in urban areas through hands-on learning and coursework. These degree programs can be completed in 1 to 2 years and may include a final capstone project.
