Within the realm of the Master of Business Administration degree, there are several different concentrations that allow you to specialize in a specific business topic or subject. Two examples of a specialized MBA degree are the MBA in International Business and the MBA in Marketing. MBA Concentrations: International Business vs Marketing

MBA in International Business

If you are interested in the global perspective of business management and theory, then the MBA in International Business may be the right choice for you. This MBA concentration primarily focuses on the global business environment and will use an international perspective to study management theories, trade, supply chains, finance, and much more. An MBA of this type could prepare you for a career in a multinational company as a global business manager or an international research analyst.

For many of these types of programs, you will need to earn around 30-36 credits, depending on the program's specific requirements. Those credits will include core MBA coursework in the subjects of leadership, ethics, and economics. You will then need to take coursework specific to the international business concentration, which could cover such topics as business law in terms of international trade, investments and patents, the cultural factors that affect global businesses, and international emerging markets.

MBA in Marketing

Another option for a specialized MBA is in the field of marketing. An MBA of this kind is a good choice for those who are more interested in studying marketing theories, advertising, consumer behavior, and media. An MBA in Marketing will prepare you for a specialized business career as a marketing manager, a sales manager, or a product manager.

A program like this could require anywhere from 36 to 45 total credits, which will vary by individual program. Like other MBA programs, you will be required to take some core business courses that will cover everything from organizational behavior to accounting. To earn this specialized MBA, you will also need to take coursework related to marketing with some of the possible topics being social media marketing, customer behavior and value, strategic marketing, sales and promotion, and new product development.

Common Entrance Requirements

No matter which concentration or MBA program you choose, there will be a common set of entrance requirements. Your admission materials will include an application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement or essay. Depending on the specific university or institution you choose, you may also need to submit GRE test scores; although, this requirement can sometimes be waived, so it's best to double check this requirement before applying.

Both an MBA in International Business and an MBA in Marketing will require that you take core coursework as well as electives related to your chosen specialized field. With a common set of entrance requirements, the reason to choose a concentration in international business or marketing should depend on what kind of business career that you want to pursue.
