MBA Programs in Maryland Without GMAT Requirement

Mar 14, 2019

Earning a Master of Business Administration, or MBA, can provide a significant career boost and professional learning experience for business professionals. However, for potential students who don't wish to take standardized tests, the Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, can be a roadblock to entering an MBA program. These students might consider one of several programs in the state of Maryland where the GMAT is not required or where the test can be waived if certain academic or professional standards are met.

Admission Requirements

Students applying to these programs must still fulfill standards for admission. Common requirements include transcripts, a personal statement or essay, a resume, and recommendations. Previous coursework in calculus or business-oriented subjects such as economics or accounting may be required.

MBA Programs in Maryland

Within the state of Maryland, there are a range of MBA programs available that do not require the GMAT scores.

Hood College

Hood College, in Frederick, offers the opportunity to earn an MBA. The program is offered on a fast-track basis, and students can graduate in two years or less. Students who did not study business as undergraduates begin the program with a series of concentration courses. Once these requirements are completed, MBA students take ten core courses and may then choose a concentration in areas including accounting and information systems.

Mt. St. Mary's College

At Mt. St. Mary's College, with campuses in Frederick and Emmitsburg, GMAT scores are not required as long as students have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher, or five years of relevant work experience. Courses are offered in an eight week format, one weeknight per week. Students typically complete the program in one to two years. Concentrations are offered in a range of areas, including government contracting and project management.

Bowie State University

Students who apply to Bowie State are exempt from GMAT requirements if they have an undergraduate GPA over a 2.75 and three or more years of work experience of a budgetary or managerial nature. To complete the program, students will take ten core courses, and then choose two business electives. Courses may include e-business technology and conflict management.

Frostburg State University

Frostburg State University offers an online MBA program. The GMAT is waived if students have an undergraduate GPA over a 3.0, or a 2.75 with more than five years of professional experience. Courses last for seven weeks, and can be completed in one year if students are enrolled on a full-time basis. Concentrations are available in areas such as health care management and business analytics.

University of Baltimore

At the University of Baltimore, students can work towards their MBA in an online or on-campus environment. The university's GMAT waiver policy requires students to hold an advanced degree, have an undergraduate major in a quantitative field with a GPA over 3.0, or a non-quantitative field over a 3.2. Waivers may also be available to those with significant professional experience. Most classes are 1.5-credit courses, taught over a seven week format. Students can select concentrations in a range of areas, including cyber security and entrepreneurship.

Earning an MBA can provide students with a well-respected professional credential in the business world. As there are a range of available programs that do not require the GMAT, students who do not wish to take standardized tests may still have options available to pursue this degree.
