A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing is a bit more challenging to find than a traditional literature degree. The state of Georgia, however, has several colleges that offer competitive, prestigious programs that culminate in the awarding of an MFA in Creative Writing.

Universities in Georgia Offering MFAs in Creative Writing

Georgia College

While Georgia College students will create a thesis in fiction, creative nonfiction or poetry, the school has a teaching philosophy that encourages its students to work across genres. It even requires students to take workshops not in their selected genre of focus as well as courses in pedagogy so that they can learn to teach writing. Georgia College's program is 42 credit hours and is designed to be completed in three years. The last two years are focused on thesis research.

Reinhardt's MFA in Creative Writing is a low-residency program with an excellent post-graduation employment rate. Its program has a 60-credit-hour curriculum which can be accomplished in two years. Students work in their chosen genre, but take cross-genre coursework as well. The university offers one-on-one mentoring, online coursework and three different writing residencies. The campus is located in the Etowah Valley, in northern Georgia between Atlanta and southern Appalachia, allowing the program to offer experiential trips to both urban and natural settings. Students from all over can attend Reinhardt due to the online coursework, and then travel there for the residencies.

Georgia State University

Georgia State University's program in creative writing offers students the chance to earn their MFA in Creative Writing, but also, should they choose, go on to obtain a PhD in the subject. The university is located in the arts-powerhouse city of Atlanta, and frequently has famous authors and poets to mentor and give workshops. Students themselves often win awards and publish their work while attending. Sample course topics include feminist theory, Beowulf, Milton, literary criticism and craft. Students must complete 42 coursework credit hours plus six research thesis hours for graduation and maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).

Program Admittance Requirements

While minimum GPAs may differ slightly from program to program, a good rule of thumb is to have a 3.0 or higher in the field of study. MFA programs in creative writing will require portfolio submissions as a part of the application process. These may be as little as 10 pages or upwards of 50 depending on the program. Personal statements, transcripts, GRE scores, and multiple letters of recommendation are standard for MFA in Creative Writing admission application materials. Some schools have a waitlist and applicants are required to contact the department head or another point of contact to ask to be put on the list to be accepted into the program.
