In order to earn your degree, you will also need to develop a creative book-length thesis in your chosen genre, either a novel, a short story collection, or a poetry collection. In this program, you also have an opportunity to participate in a community outreach program that develops your teaching skills by allowing you to mentor local kids in creative writing. You could also gain editorial experience by working with the program's literary journal Yemassee.

College of Charleston

Located in Charleston, the College of Charleston's MFA program requires 39 credits that include craft workshops in your emphasis area, either poetry or fiction, as well as graduate-level literature courses that could center on British, American, or global literature and literary theory. This program also offers an arts management emphasis that allows you to take courses on the business-side of creative writing, including classes on fundraising, marketing, volunteer management, and financial management. You will also be required to complete a book-length thesis in this program, as well.

Converse College

In Spartanburg, Converse College offers a low-residency MFA program that requires 48 total credits. This 2-year program consists of four on-campus 9-day residencies, which include writing workshops, craft lectures, one-on-one consultations, and presentations by visiting writers. When you are not attending these residencies, you will be mentored by faculty and required to submit creative writing work and topic papers on craft, which fulfill your coursework credits. In order to graduate, you must complete one final residency, submit a book-length thesis in your chosen genre, submit a research paper, submit an annotated bibliography of your approved reading list, give an oral presentation on your thesis, perform a public reading, and lead a craft seminar. In this program, you may choose to specialize in fiction, poetry, young adult fiction, non-fiction, or environmental writing. Students in the Converse MFA program may also choose 2 writing genres, which would raise the required number of credits to 60.
