Universities in Vermont with MFA in Creative Writing Programs

Vermont College of Fine Arts

Vermont College of Fine Arts offers an International MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Translation as well as a MFA in Writing in which students can focus on multiple genres. The creative writing MFA is designed for writers and translators seeking a program with that covers world literature and writing across cultures. The general writing MFA allows students to choose a specialization in areas like poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. These programs last two years, with a 10-day residency at the beginning of the semester.

Goddard College

Goddard College offers a low residency MFA in Creative Writing program that has been offered since 1976. Each semester begins with an 8-day residency offering workshops, lectures, masterclasses, and keynote speakers. The thesis requirement for this MFA is a novel-length work. During their first semester students are introduced to writing in different genres and by the second semester, they select their genre for their thesis work. Possible genres available include: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction or graphic novels. They might also focus their program on writing for plays, television or movies. Students are also required to complete a teaching practicum designed to prepare them for teaching in higher education positions.

Bennington College

Bennington College offers two-year low residency MFA in Creative Writing program. The program is broken into terms. In the first and second terms, coursework involves reading 20-30 books and crafting responses as well as a 10-page minimum essay. The third term is similar except students continue to work on their growing body of work and the essay at the end of the term is set at a 20-page minimum. The fifth term culminates in the student presenting a literary lecture, his or her creative thesis and doing a formal 20-minute reading of his or her finished creative work at the final residency. Each term takes about five months. Two residencies are required per year, one in January and one in June. Residencies are 10 days long and held at the Bennington campus.

Program Admittance Requirements for a MFA in Creative Writing Programs

Applicants to a MFA in Creative Writing program are usually required to fill out the standard graduate school application and includes that school's required materials - which may include letters of recommendation, transcripts, GRE scores, and personal essays. MFA programs in creative writing also usually require the submission of a portfolio or writing samples. Each college defines the application criteria slightly differently, but each school typically requires rigorous proof of the applicant's writing proficiency and talent.
