University of Colorado Boulder

Students in the MFA in Art Practices program offered by the University of Colorado Boulder can focus their studies on one of a number of fields of study, including painting and drawing. The program's curriculum consists of 54 credit hours that can be completed over a span of two and a half years. Of these 54 credits, 12 must be completed as studio courses within a student's chosen area of study. An additional 21 credits are completed through electives. The program also requires that students complete courses in art history and theory, graduate and visiting artist seminars, and a six-credit-hour thesis.

Students who are interested in working as professors of art may be interested in participating in the Graduate Teacher Program, which provides students with experience as teaching assistants and offers two certificates: the Certificate in College Teaching and the Future Faculty Development Certificate. Students who would like their studies to be more interdisciplinary can also take an additional four courses and earn a graduate certificate in areas like museology, critical theory, and gender studies in addition to their degree.

Colorado State University

Another option for students is Colorado State's MFA in Painting. The program curriculum is comprised of 60 total credit hours, 30 of which must be fulfilled through concentration-specific courses. The remaining 30 credits can be completed through art history courses, elective courses, and studio seminar courses. The program is designed to be completed over six semesters, or three academic years. Students are able to work on their projects and paintings in semi-private studios and also have access to the other facilities at the art school, including galleries and computer labs. It is also possible to apply for graduate teaching assistantships in the program, which may be a good option for students who plan on teaching art as well as those who would like tuition assistance, as these positions receive a full-tuition waiver.
