Military-friendly Schools in Los Angeles County

Los Angeles County offers a range of education options, from premiere institutions like Pepperdine to good value schools like Pasadena City College. Military students and veterans have many choices to pursue their educational and career goals in the heart of the Golden State.

Long Beach City College

This large public school is rated as a Military Friendly Silver school, due to its services and accommodations for veterans and military students. It not only provides tuition discounts and scholarships for military students and veterans, it also offers special orientation services, mentoring, and enrollment sessions.

Long Beach City College, also known as LBCC, serves nearly 25,000 students. It has a large number of programs for students focused on earning 2-year associate's degrees, completing avocational training programs, and preparing for transfer to 4-year colleges and universities. In addition, this school offers distance learning programs as well as evening and weekend programs that can make it easier for working students, as well as veterans and military students, to complete their courses.

Pepperdine University

Pepperdine University encourages military students to attend with an active ROTC program for both the Army and the Air Force. It also waives ACT and SAT score requirements for veterans and military.

This is a Christian school associated with the Church of Christ. It is home to the School of Public Policy as well as Seaver College, the Graziado School of Business, the School of Law, and a Graduate School of Education and Psychology. It has multiple campuses in Southern California, as well as a program in Washington D.C. and international campuses in Europe, South America, and Asia. It is rated as a Military Friendly Bronze school and designated as Military Friendly Spouse school.

The Los Angeles Film School

Located in Hollywood, this could be a good choice for veterans interested in pursuing a career in entertainment, film, music, or radio. The school has a dedicated Military Services Department to help veterans and military students succeed and offers in-state tuition without residency as well as tuition discounts and scholarships.

While this school is best known for film production, it also offers programs in music production, animation, and video games. In addition, it offers courses pertaining to the business side of the entertainment and film industries, with programs in marketing research, finance, and communications. This school is rated Military Friendly Gold and serves about 3,000 students.

Pasadena City College

Military students and veterans may find this school to be an excellent value. While it doesn't offer special discounts, the tuition cost is quite low to begin with. Pasadena City College also offers distance-learning programs, study abroad opportunities, and weekend and evening courses. This public college has a Bronze rating for Military Friendly schools.

For 2017, Pasadena City College was in the running for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. It is also ranked as one of the top five community colleges in California. It offers 60 associate degree programs as well as 70 vocational training programs. There are just over 27,000 students at this school.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

This institution offers Army ROTC programs, which military students may find valuable. It also offers VA work-study programs for qualified students. In addition, it offers distance-learning programs, which can be helpful to veterans and military students who may face relocation or deployment.

This school is also known as Cal Poly Pomona. It offers degrees from the bachelor's level, through the graduate level, and on up to doctoral degrees. It also offers teacher certification programs in addition to an active department providing employment and placement assistance programs for graduates. There are over 25,000 students at this institution.
